Incidental Trainer: A Reference Guide for Training Design, Development, and Delivery, by Margaret Wan

"We have trained and trained. The employees still don’t get it!" Although a critical component in improving organizational performance, training is usually not conducted effectively and results in a waste of resources. Often, subject-matter experts are given training responsibilities because of their technical expertise; however, just as often, these subject-matter experts, or "incidental trainers," do not have a background in adult education, training, or facilitation. Incidental Trainer: A Reference Guide for Training Design, Development, and Delivery provides an evidence-based reference to successful training for subject-matter experts in any discipline who want to achieve the effectiveness of a professional trainer.

Organizations assume that subject-matter experts can train others, creating difficult situations for incidental trainers who may be at a loss on where to begin. This book guides incidental trainers through the process of training design, development, and delivery to help them achieve effectiveness in their training program. It explains the fundamental steps from assessing the training needs to validating the training program. The book then discusses advanced topics, such as how to build a business case for the training budget and training in the virtual environment.

The changing demographics of the workforce and technologies in delivery methods require adoption of new instructional strategies. Packed with practical tips for implementation in the real world, the book clearly details training techniques that incidental trainers can use to become proficient as professional trainers in enhancing training effectiveness to support organizational goals.

An excellent guide for those “incidental trainers” who need to learn how to impart their message more efficiently ...
By Deb
Not everyone is a motivational speaker, nor can we expect any workplace trainer to be one. What does happen is that in spite of the message a trainer offers up to employees, something is lost in the translation. The employee doesn’t “get it” and doesn’t want to. Some of the methods in the latter part of the book are advanced, but the first part “provides the fundamental steps in the design, development, and delivery of training.”

If you have a workshop, your employees may be there in body, but when the message isn’t being absorbed something has to be done. The entire structure of the training methodology needs to be reassessed and addressed. Margaret Wan offers up a highly structured step-by-step method for doing just that.

Usually the problem lies with the “trainer no knowing how to train.” These are usually “incidental trainers,” those whose job is not necessarily to train, but are rather stuck with a job they don’t necessarily know how to perform. They know the material, but that’s about as far as it goes.

In this book you can teach yourself, an incidental trainer, who needs to get on the right track and teach yourself the fundamentals of training. If you are a large corporation and make use of the incidental trainer, this book can act as a guideline to help these trainers.

The seven keys to training include:

1. Organizational support
2. Needs assessment
3. Training plan
4. Competency assessment
5. Presentation and facilitation
6. Course evaluation
7. Program validation

Chapters are outlined in a step-by-step code-like formula. Each begins with a very brief introduction, ends with a summary, and an excellent list of references. The book is not pedantic, but rather quite well-written, clear, and concise. This is an excellent guide for those “incidental trainers” who need to learn how to impart their message more efficiently.

Surprised to find yourself wearing training shoes?
By pixels and bits
Written in an engaging and easy-to-follow manner, I found this reference to be very well executed. I particularly appreciate the scientific approach that was used to collect and organize the material. There are 2 main parts with many chapters in a wide range of topics that are geared towards those who suddenly found themselves wearing the shoes of trainers. I like to jump around from topic to topic as there are many that will be useful in my work. The broad range of topics is impressive. The first section I read was the part that deals with Generational Training. I keep telling myself I'm going to go back and read from the beginning, but I keep getting distracted by topics that can help me meet my current training goals.

It's filed under "Industrial Engineering & Safety" but applies across countless disciplines and types of organizations. I added the Table of Contents below because this information, provided by the publisher, is not included in Amazon's description. I think it will illustrate the wealth of up-to-date material covered in this book.

Easy to read, complete with some examples, but recommend using different sample forms.
By Epilady
People in professional positions may not have the background as a trainer but will almost invariably be asked to step into those shoes at some point in their career, whether it's cross-training internally, getting outsiders up-to-speed, teaching new hires, or helping to expand knowledge of colleagues.

Wan has written a strong approach, with sound fundamentals in what needs to happen for a successful, engaged training, benefiting both trainer and trainee(s).

From the fundamentals, Wan suggests instituting a needs assessment to plan for next steps and see what needs to be learned. Developing a training plan is essential, and Wan gives some tools and a general structure to try. The next focus is on learning objectives (always have these, because it guides the training). Wan also describes (in general) several different instructional styles. She also strongly suggests testing and assessment and evaluation of the course to improve upon it.

There are 4 appendices with sample forms for
*Training needs
*Task analysis
*Training plan
*Course evaluation

The sample forms are pretty rudimentary, but using the information gathered in this book, it would be easy to locate some better forms and tools from other places on the internet. It's a good place to start, or to improve the quality of a training.
