About the Author

Wonderful Resource!

Love this book! As a devout Ron Clark follower and an RCA "Slide Certified" teacher, I knew I would love the book. I haven't had a chance to use the activities with my class yet (still 21 days left of summer, but who's counting! ;) but the book is already full of post it notes and jottings in the margins! From what I've read, I feel that the activities could all be used or easily adapted to any grade level with minor tweaking. Some are role-play based, some are survey/questionnaire style and some open ended...what I'm getting at is your kids won't get bored, the activities have a wide variety of ways to bring enthusiasm to the classroom, and are all effective methods for teaching and practicing the Essential 55.

My only complaint is that the item was listed as "little or no wear" or "near new" (I honestly can't remember the exact wording they used) and the cover is bent so badly it's near ripping, and the spine is cracking significantly and I'm afraid I'm going to lose pages!

Excellent read, and usable classroom info.

This info is a guideline for what you should do in your classroom. 55 rules! I know, it seems like a lot, but most of this is broken down into the parts of the few rules we post regularly.

Yes ma'am, be the best you, lift up your classmates... Aren't those all part of treat others the way you want to be treated?

Some may not apply...leave a tip on the pillow when you stay overnight in a hotel for a field trip. But it is good to still teach kiddos that this is proper.

This book is more about manners, teaching that life isn't always fair, and you can teach anybody.

Love this book!! I've had several copies, but I always loan it out to other teachers or to student teachers and always forget to get it back. I have another student teacher this year and wanted her to read it, so I gave this one to her the day it came in! - This is a must read for ALL teachers - old and new!

Frank Nielsen (Japan) is a technical director and researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories Inc., and has written extensively on graphic design and programming in several journals including Transactions on Graphics, Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications, Transactions on Pattern Analysis, and Machine Intelligence. His writings have also appeared in numerous conference papers. Nielsen has also taught in France at ESSI and ISIA (Ecole des Mines de Paris). He holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the University of Nice (France).

Taking inspiration from the brain structure (neurons), linguistic rather than precise way of description by humans (not so cold, very warm), genetics and the behaviour of birds and ants in the nature, new techniques for the solution of various problems have been developed over the past three decades or so. All these techniques are broadly classified as artificial intelligence or computational intelligence.

Artificial intelligence encompasses methods like artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic. Computational intelligence includes optimization methods such as genetic algorithm, evolutionary algorithm, arts colony, particle swarm optimization, etc. and their variations. Feasibility of the application of these techniques in various control and optimization problems has been investigated extensively and these techniques have been applied to physical systems in a number of cases.

With the computational power now available, importance of this relatively new branch of knowledge, that is heavily dependent on soft computing, will grow significantly in the future. The appearance of a book like this one helps spread awareness about the new techniques based on soft computing and is thus a welcome addition.

A tour de force of new literary criticism.In their introduction, Gallagher (Nobody’s Story, not reviewed) and Greenblatt (Marvelous Possessions, 1991) express the hope that “you will not be able to say what it all adds up to; if you could, we would have failed.” Alas, they succeed, and it’s doubtful that a better demonstration of the anarchy and solipsism of literary criticism today can be found. They mean to demonstrate how their varied approaches to all sorts of “texts” grow out of the rediscovery by scholars like them of the relevance of historical and cultural context to the interpretation of just about everything. But they do so in ways that their predecessors—the Victorian scholars who used history as an interpretive tool before the New Critics began to avoid it—would scarcely comprehend. Moreover, with misplaced modesty, they refuse to claim that their interpretations are any better than others—which, of course, is an imposed interpretive principle of its own. This being said, Gallagher and Greenblatt’s virtuoso readings of paintings, potatoes (yes, spuds), religious ritual, and novels—all “texts”—as well as essays on criticism and the significance of anecdotes, are likely to take their place as model examples of the qualities of the new critical school that they lead. Ironically, because everything they write suffers from what might be called the fallacy of excessive significance (i.e., finding in texts what may not be there), they reveal themselves to be as adept at close reading as the New Critics they shun. Historians (who know something about historicism) will find their teeth set on edge by the way Gallagher and Greenblatt do history. But that’s part of the fun and fascination of the book.A zesty work for those already initiated into the incestuous world of contemporary literary criticism—and for those who might like to see what all the fuss is about. Waiting for a Theory of Practice

Written by the two leading practitioners of New Historicism, this book is the most valuable reference up to date demonstrating the power, as well as the weaknesses, of this peculiar "method" of reading. The first three chapters on methodology advocate the immanence of (counter)historical particulars and anecdotes, which explains the authors' reluctance to endorse any transcendental abstraction of theory. Paradoxically, the historical sense as well as literary "taste" (the valuation of difference, details, ruptures) that Greenblatt and Gallagher embrace is recognisably shaped by contemporary theoretical interventions, but this debt to theory is obscured as a result of their disavowal of any "methodological directives." This obstinate disavowal, worse still, seems to join force with the conservative current of "Against Theory" in the name of history (the very motto put forward by some critics who are also related to New Historicism). The next four chapters are the "practice" part, where the authors obviously feel more at home. Their close reading and deft montage of a wide variety of discourses or artifices (drama, fiction, paintings, theological and economic debates, medical treatises...) is marvelous and dazzling, testifying how much New Historicism has widened the horizon of literary criticism. The juxtaposition of topics (the Host and the potato, the wicked sons in Hamlet and Great Expectations) also throws unexpected light on the materials. Yet the question remains: how to theorise further such montage or juxtaposition, if it is not entirely governed by whim?

The conceptual frame work of New Historicism is not the toughest to grapple with and when done right makes excellent literary analysis. This book really lays out its pedagogical applications in a clear and tangible way. I teach Literary Criticism and now I include this book for my undergrads so that they can understand this process better.

Great book and very practical!

This is a great book, Ray Deck III has made it possible for every person to be creative. By looking at creativity more as a learned skill and less as a gift this book provides practical and DAILY exercises that will assist you and me in our creativity. I highly recommend this book.

Abundant creativity help for us non-creatives

I've said for a while now that there's not a creative bone in my body. If 1 out of 5 people are a "creative" and I'm in a room with 4 other non-creatives, I'm still not the creative and the statistic is broken.

RayDeck3 has an uncanny ability to take the non-creative like myself on an unbelievably easy brain-expanding exercise in creativity. This book has helped me not only try to think outside the box, but imagine a new box, invent the box, build the box, and then come up with several new ways to market the box. Ray's writing style is both simple and profound.

I am sure that this book will be a regular resource of mine for years to come. Don't pass it up.

Think, Dream, Act ... Create

This little book does deliver what the title promises ... one hundred discussions on the nuts and bolts of creativity. Some are repetitive in nature and purposefully so, the act of creating is a full of repetition. Though most of the concepts were not new to me, I found the book to be enjoyable and at times actually thought provoking.

This is a subject of lifelong fascination for me. What drives us to create and the paths we travel to do so. I approached this book not necessarily needing help with coming up with ideas. -- I currently have enough of them to keep a cloned team of five busy for a few lifetimes as it is. -- It was more for the chance to explore other perspectives on what creativity is. However, if I did ever need help getting the ideas flowing some of the sections may indeed prove quite helpful. And not just with the start up point of a project, there are topics covered to help you move along the course all the way to completion. As well as some tips on how to move straight on to your next endeavor.

I would happily recommend this book to anyone who is perhaps a little nervous about taking those first steps to bring an idea from concept to tangible product.
