"Phil's new book Gypsy Joker To A Hells Angel is based on 44 years as a Hells Angel. Photos & stories are a must read for all motorcycle riders" - Sonny Barger
In the early 1960s, a young Navy vet, motorcyclist, amateur photographer, and rebel named Phil Cross joined a motorcycle club called the Hells Angels. It turned out to be a bogus chapter of the club that would soon find infamy, so he switched to another club called the Night Riders. Like the bogus chapter of the Hells Angels, this turned out to be a club whose brotherhood was run by a man Mr. Cross describes as “a complete asshole.” One day, Mr. Cross stuffed the leader in a ringer-type washing machine and joined a club called the Gypsy Jokers. He started a San Jose chapter of the Jokers and embarked on the most action-packed years of his life. The Jokers were in the midst of a shooting war with the real Hells Angels. The fighting became so intense that the Jokers posted snipers atop their clubhouse. This was a rough time, but it was also the height of the free-love hippie era, and as a young man, Phil enjoyed himself to the fullest. He never let anything as minor as a little jail time stop his fun. Once, while serving time for fighting and fleeing an officer, Phil broke out of jail, entered his bike in a bike show, won the bike show, and broke back into jail before anyone discovered he was missing. Though Phil was tough—he was a certififed martial arts instructor—the Angels proved a tough foe. After multiple beating-induced emergency room visits, Mr. Cross decided that if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, so he and most of his club brothers patched over to become the San Jose chapter of the Hells Angels. This book chronicles the life and wild times of Mr. Cross in words and photos.

From the Inside Flap
In the early 1960s, the exploding motorcycle club culture in California attracted a young motorcyclist named Phil Cross, who joined a motorcycle club called the “Hells Angels.” It turned out to be a bogus chapter of the club that would soon find infamy, so he switched to another club called the Night Riders. Like the bogus chapter of the Hells Angels, this turned out to be a club run by a man Mr. Cross describes as “a complete asshole.” One day Mr. Cross stuffed said complete asshole in a ringer-type washing machine and joined a club called the Gypsy Jokers. He started the San Jose Charter of the Jokers and embarked on the most action-packed years of his life. The Jokers were in the midst of a bloody battle with the real Hells Angels. The fighting became so intense that the Jokers posted snipers atop their clubhouse. Eventually Phil and many of his fellow Jokers realized that the only way to end the battle with the Hells Angels was to become Hells Angels, so most of the San Jose Charter patched over to become the San Jose charter of the Hells Angels. This was a rough time, but it was also the height of the free-love hippie era, and as a young man, Phil enjoyed himself to the fullest. He never let anything as minor as a bit of jail time hinder his fun. Once, while serving time for fighting and fleeing an officer, Phil broke out of jail, entered his bike in a bike show, won the bike show, and broke back into jail before anyone had discovered he was missing. Phil Cross: Gypsy Joker to a Hells Angel tells the story of one man’s fifty-plus-year life in the unique, often dangerous, and always exciting culture of the three-patch motorcycle club.

Phil Cross: Gypsy Joker to a Hells Angel chronicles Cross’ life and times in his own words and photos, from his early years with the Gypsy Jokers through his forty-plus-year career as a Hells Angel, a career that led to his being a fugitive on the FBI’s most-wanted list (more than once) and a stint in prison. Best 1%er bio out there
By David Burr
I have read pretty much every 1%er biography written , many pretty well done. But after some point, you pretty much stop looking for new ones, deciding that the heyday of this genre has come and gone because of the retirement of the people that were there when it was most interesting.
I did in fact give up a couple of years ago, figuring that I'd wrung it out, but got bored last weekend and did a search on Amazon and found this book. What a surprise. Here is what makes it great:
1) Credibility of author - Phil had a 40+ career with the Hells Angels and great experiences before that
2) Lack of "personal philosophy" - Some of these authors think we go into their books with some sort of hero worship that makes their thoughts on all trivial matters somehow incredibly important, so we have to spend a lot of time on that. This book isn't written like that at all. Phil is not into himself - he just knows that he has a lot to tell and there are so many of us that want to hear about what HAPPENED and what he DID, so he is really great about sharing that part.
3) Construction - The flow is really great, in that we only spend enough time in each life phase to get to know Phil. By the time you're ready for the next phase, the next chapter starts.
4) The mind-blowing abundance of photographs MAKES this book. Phil documents everything from from soup to nuts and really takes you there. No other 1%er bio even comes close to this.
It's just hard to imagine anything topping this, because the only individuals that even have the tools to do it are either unfortunately not with us anymore, or have already given us their stories.

Amazing Book With Timeless Photography
By Dave-O
Phil Cross is a guy who was in the Navy, fell in love with motorcycles, joined the San Jose chapter of the Gypsy Jokers MC, patched over to the Hells Angels MC, and photographed it all along the way. The pictures Cross includes honestly are the best part of the book. The nostalgia you get looking at the bikes and run pics of Cross and his club make this a real biker book. The choppers and bobbers the old timers are riding reminded me there used to be more personality to a motorcycle than a blacked out Dyna with T-Bars and a quarter fairing. Cross narrates but doesn't come off as self serving or spend to much time over explaining. It's a real biker book anyone who rides Harley Davidson motorcycles should own.

Incredible Images and Pitch-Perfect Storytelling
By Klaus_Kinski
I am a sucker for any book about outlaw motorcycle club culture and the individuals who roam within them. As a blue blooded 81 supporter, I definitely gravitate towards books about Hells Angels; whether it's Sonny or Chuck's autobiographies, Hunter Thompson's gonzo trials and tribulations within the club in the 60s, Freewheelin' Frank's bizarre tome about the MC, or the dozens of so-called true-crime books written by 'experts' about infiltrating the club, the canadian MC wars, or whatever they can whip up to cash in on the biker culture... I read it all. Outlaws, Pagans, Bandidos, Satans Choice, whatever... I read em all.
So it was obvious that when the book "Phil Cross: Gypsy Joker to a Hells Angel" came out I'd be the first in line to grab it. On every level, this book is an absolute must have, no matter where your so-called club allegiances lie. Every aspect of this book is perfection. The hardcover version is slightly oversized with an incredible full color dust jacket that pulls your eyes right out of your head. And as MC culture evolves (or devolves, depending on who you ask) it's always refreshing to grab a book written by one of the old school players. Phil Cross is one such player. Phil Cross is one tough bastard. In the military he got into loads of trouble thanks to his willingness to let his fists do the talking. After the military he got heavily involved in west coast MC culture in the 60s, still taking care of business with those fists. As a Gypsy Joker he had his fair share of scrapes with the Hells Angels, eventually being patched over. From there, the rest is history.
Phil's writing style is remarkably succinct. With the help of copious amounts of images, Phil lets us in on some of his many adventures, but without over-doing it with flowery elaboration. His anecdotes read a lot like "I was at here with my buddy, then this happened, we went there, did that, and that's it." This book is an unbelievably clear and readable account of over 40 years as a biker. The book is highly addictive and I cannot emphasize enough how great the use of photographs is.
