Anyone who loves Beatrix Potter will love these adorable stories

I bought the first book in this series and got my local library to get this one for me. But after reading the stories in this volume and beholding the lovely pictures, I had to have it too.
I just love the Foxwood Tales! They are so cute and interesting, and the lovely pictures will delight both adult and child. I would highly reccomend these stories to anyone who is a fan of Betrix Potter, and it's my beliefe that if Beatrix was alive she too would be a fan of these adorable stories.

About the Author
Johann Sebastian Bach was the first great musician to disregard the rules of harmony and rhythm that were strictly followed by other composers. This fact alone helped to make him the forerunner of musical composition as we know it today. Born the son of a violinist in Eisenach, Germany, in 1685, he received his first musical training on the violin. At the age of 10, he went to live in the home of his brother Christoph, who taught Johann to play the harpsichord and the organ. It was also at this time that Bach began school, where his boy-soprano voice was greatly admired and appreciated. When his voice changed, Bach concentrated on the violin; but the organ soon took his interest, and he decided to devote himself to church music. At the age of 18, Bach became the organist at Arnstadt and began his work in musical composition. After a short period of time, he moved to Muhlhausen where he married his cousin, Maria Bach. At Muhlhausen he began to experiment with changes in the music used in the church services of the German Protestant Church. It was also during this time that he began to become somewhat well known. It was this that gained for him the position as court organist and violinist to the duke at Weimar, where he remained for about nine years. During this nine-year period, he wrote many cantatas for the Church, suites for the clavichord and harpsichord, and fugues (musical compositions in which the first melody is continually repeated and imitated throughout the entire piece). In fact, because he wrote so many fugues for the organ and piano, he is often called "the Great Master of the Fugue." His next position at Köthen was during the period in which he produced much of his orchestral music and music for the clavichord and harpsichord. In 1720 his wife died; and a year later he married Anna Wulken, who was also a musician. She evidently helped him considerably in his work. In 1723 Bach went to Leipzig as music director of the Thomas-schule. During his stay at Leipzig, he wrote many of his church cantatas and oratorios. Among these is his famous Christmas Oratorio. In 1749 Bach became totally blind; and in the following year, 1750, he died. Historians tell us that Bach did not seem to associate very much with other musicians and was far more interested in his family of 20 children and in composing and directing his church choirs than in becoming "famous." In addition to his almost unequaled skill as a composer, he also was an excellent organ builder, as well as an expert music copyist. Since most of his life was spent within a few miles of his birthplace, we also now know that Bach s music was not widely known throughout the world during his lifetime. In fact, many of Bach s most beautiful works were unpublished and unperformed for almost 100 years, until two later composers (Mendelssohn and Schumann) discovered the beauties of his music and began to perform them and make them known to the world. Josquin des Pres was born in France. His career in music began in 1976 when he obtained his first record deal signing his fusion band with United Artist Records. Since then, he has produced hundreds of projects, working with some of the biggest names in the recording industry: Jeff Porcaro (Toto), Bernie Taupin, Vinny Colaiuta (Sting), Steve Lukather (Toto) Billy Sheehan, Bunny Brunel etc. As a songwriter, he is one of the very few to collaborate on numerous songs with Elton John s legendary lyricist Bernie Taupin. As the owner of Track Star Studios in La Mesa, Josquin des Pres does more for his clients then just record demos or CDs. He helps mold the creative process, planning production strategy and develops the project so that it is competitive on today s music scene.

Bach is Best!

As a long time guitar picker who recently became obsessed with all things Jaco Pastorius, I felt the need to purchase a bass guitar and plumet the depths of the F clef. This streamlined volume contains 10 pieces by J.S. Bach transcribed for the bass in TAB as well as traditional notation. It's a no-frills, no filler, edition packed with 100% protein! I chose this book over the other Bach for Bass book offered at Amazon mainly because this included a CD in the bargain. The material contained in this book is such a rich and solid foundation in the construction of scales and chords, that it would be beneficial to anyone interested in building their own solid musical vocabulary. So, continue to slap and pop that bass! But if you want to turn some heads,try playing melodically. This is the book to plant musical seeds with!

Lots of fun

I'll admit that these beautiful cello suites do not sound that great when played on bass, BUT they make for very efficient and fun exercise for improving bass technique/technical efficiency; and provide myriad ideas for improvisation patterns.

Written in 1931, Tintin in America was chronologically the third Tintin adventure but is generally considered the first in the "official" canon. The stereotypes probably fit how a European would have looked at the New World, from Al Capone's gangsters in Chicago to a Native American tribe in the unfortunately named Redskin City, as Tintin and Snowy escape one peril after another in pursuit of villain Bobby Smiles. It's one of Herge's least complex--and least entertaining--tales, still worth a read but not a good introduction to the series as a whole. --David Horiuchi

Satire and serial thrills as our heroes race through the USA

Although it begins with a precise date (1931) and location (Chicago) and features a real historical figure (Al Capone), 'Tintin In America' is Herge's tribute to the mythical America of dime novels and silent serials (especially gangster stories and Westerns). There's a real 'Perils Of Pauline' quality to Tintin's misadventures, which see the young reporter and his faithful terrier Snowy attempt to clean Chicago of gangsters, and which includes trapdoors, underground passages, falls from cliffs broken by handy branches, tetherings to railway lines etc. On their arrival, the pair are plunged into a hectic series of mishaps - they are kidnapped by a mob stooge in a steel-shuttered limousine; sawing their way out, they are met by police, and give chase; just as the nabbed hood is about to squeal, he is knocked out by a boomerang, whose owner they pursue in a gun-stuttering chase which ends in the first of many vehicular accidents. Throughout, Tintin will be gassed, dumped into Lake Michigan, shot at by a professional sniper, captured by Red Indians, have his brakeless train dynamited, and be thrown into a mincer. Welcome to America!
The simple-minded pleasures of these melodrama cliches are supplemented by a sophisticated and often quite savage critique on modern America (having tackled Bolshevik Russia in the previous adventure), an America on the brink of globalising superpowerdom, a critique that invokes the past to indict the present. The Red Indian sequence at first seems in dubious taste, with the warriors easily manipulated by a gang leader into mutilating Tintin - their knee-jerk savagery and comical rituals are the sad cliches of many a Western. But in the book's most perturbing sequence, Tintin accidentally hits oil on their land; they are speedily thrown off the reservation, and oil wells, banks and a new city erected in its place; a brilliant, shocking encapsulation of the long and terrible history that underlies bright modern America. The gangster epidemic is linked to police and presidential corruption, while the tendency of famed American democracy and justice to degenerate into mob rule and lynching is unflinchingly pinpointed, as are the ecological crimes of big business. In fact, Herge sees American capitalism as a form of cannibalism - a sausage-grinding plant is a front for disposing of gangland enemies, their flesh mingled with animal meat for sale (the leader of the gang is a dead ringer for Foucault!). Conversely, Tintin is at one point rescued by a labor strike! One frame must have registered on the young Jean-Luc Godard, in which Tintin passes a landscape of car-wreckage overlooked by advertising hoardings. The irony of the story is that America, once so new, innocent, a beacon of hope where the world's oppressed could find refuge, has become as corrupt as the Old World, to which Tintin must return ito protect HIS innocence.
Herge's satirical instinct does not preclude a great love for the LOOK of America, with its precisionist skyscraperscapes, and vast prairie spaces. Herge deliberately streamlines his animation, drawing in bold, uncluttered strokes and strong, bright colours, giving some indication of the size and modernity of America, as well as its anonymity, conformity and assembly line mentality. The nocturnal scenes, in which the overall brightness becomes deeply mysterious, are particularly beautiful. I dare anyone who views the flabbergasting scene of Tintin clambering across an endless skyscrapter not to feel dizzy. Within his frames, Herge creates an extraordinary dynamism of movement. I particularly love it when characters walk on the border of the frame, as if getting ready to leap from it.

As a child, I read all of the Tintin books in Swedish, except the first one "Tintin in the Soviets". As an adult living in the U.S., I am reading most of them again to my children, but this time in English. Herge's first three Tintin books are not as good as his later books, and this was his third book. "Tintin in Congo" is the only Tintin book that I have read that is worse than this one. "Tintin in America" portrays America with an old fashioned European prejudice that is unrealistic and unflattering. His portrayal of the Indians is borderline racist, and the plot is essentially "gangster tries to kill Tintin, Tintin miraculously escapes" repeated a couple of dozen times. In a sense Tintin is a super hero with "luck" as his super power, and this becomes tiresome. The plot is silly, and the book is certainly not a history lesson.

Kids seven and below could enjoy this book, older kids will consider it stupid. If Herge instead had written "Tintin in Sweden" at this time, all the Swedes would have been blond, stupid, and quiet. There would be polar bears and reindeers in the streets, Samis would have been portrayed in an insulting way, and Tintin would have been repeatedly attacked by gnomes. Just to put this book in a Swedish perspective (for fellow Swedes). Humor has changed since 1932, and so did Herge's soon after (1934).

Having said that, the book is still entertaining, in its own way, and my kids have asked me to read it a few times, which I have. If you or your kids like Tintin books then buy it, but don't let this one be your first. Herge's master pieces came later in history. My favorites are "Tintin in Tibet", "Blue Lotus", "Flight 714", "The crab with the golden claw", and "The Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun", but I really like all of the later ones.

Tintin in America, the third volume in the Adventures of Tintin series, is the earliest Tintin story available from its American publisher, most likely due to the fact that its two predecessors (Tintin au pays de Soviets and Tintin au Congo) are widely considered to be just too politically incorrect. If you are a political correctitude sort of person, you will likely find Tintin in America to be lacking in that area as well, but it is important to remember that it is a story steeped in its time, and more importantly, fictional.

What Tintin in America lacks in the indefinable quality some of the later adventures possess (The Calculus Affair, The Castafiore Emerald, and Flight 714, to name a few), it makes up in its suspense factor. Danger looms around every corner in this story (Gangsters! Indians! A meat-canning factory!), and it doesn't matter how many times you've read it before -- you will still need to get through the entire story each time you read it!

To sum up: Somewhat awkwardly composed, and rife with stereotypes that seem ridiculous nowadays, Tintin in America is nevertheless a compelling and fun read. It is, after all, a Tintin book.

First of all, the car on the cover has been in Hop Up, built by a friend of Hop Up; or you may have seen it at Lone Star Roundup.
Jim began to write the story of his "Special' build..and the story got legs, became a smash of a first novel and God knows where it will lead. Don't miss it: cars, lakes history all the right names of the pre war, wartime and immediate post war, a little bit of sex and intrigue and excellent development of characters and plots that, well, professional writers can do.

About the Author
J. E. Pendleton felt compelled to write his first book from his love of family, automobiles, and history. Although a novel, many of the characters and facts are based on truth. He is working on a series based on the origins of World War II, what he considers the single most important event of the twentieth century. He resides in Texas with his wife and family.

Fantastic Book!

This book is a must-read! The author wrote an incredible story that appeals to men and women alike. Every detail is thorough, the characters are well-developed, and it flows in such a way that makes it read very easily. Whether you enjoy it for the technical aspects surrounding the race car or WWII, or are drawn by the phenomenal story of love and family, you will not be disappointed by 'The Special'.

Great historical novel

I really enjoyed this book. I ordered the Kindle edition and after reading it, ordered the book for my husband. I was not expecting to enjoy the car parts of this book, but was drawn in despite my lack of knowledge about cars. Loved the war history and the beautiful love story.

This was an awesome book. It made you feel like you were right there in everything going on. A great love story, but not mushy. Great family story. Loved the details in the making of the Special. Anyone who loves to read, I would recommend it.

I cannot follow his meanings as closely as I'd like. I suppose this is not a problem for ...

This long out of print history of Art Academies is finally available at a reasonable cost. I bought one right away. The quality of this reprinting is decent. Thank you to Cambridge University Press for making it available.

As to the text itself, there is one HUGE caveat.. that Pevsner's writing style uses A LOT of quoted passages in foreign languages, with NO TRANSLATION. The languages I have come across so far are Italian (a lot of these), Latin, German, and French. Sometimes he quotes entire paragraphs in a foreign language. Since I don't speak these language, I cannot follow his meanings as closely as I'd like. I suppose this is not a problem for Pevsners audience of academic art historians from the 1940s... whom I presume spoke many European languages... but if you (like me) do not.... you will find it strangely alienating. You are forced to just SKIP IT AND MOVE ON... LOL... it's kind-a weird.

But anyway... the book is excellent despite this.

About the Author
Leighton Johnson is the CTO and Senior Security Engineer for Information Security and Forensics Management Team (ISFMT), a provider of computer security, forensics consulting & certification training. He has over 38 years experience in Computer Security, Software Development and Communications Equipment Operations & Maintenance. Primary focus areas have included computer security, information operations & assurance, software system development life cycle focused on modeling & simulation systems, systems engineering and integration activities, anti-terrorism/cyber terrorism, database administration, business process & data modeling. He just completed service as the AT/COOP task lead for a DOD Field Agency, based in Alexandria, VA. He recently was the CIO for a 450 person directorate within Lockheed Martin IS&GS covering 9 locations within the Eastern and Midwestern parts of the U.S. He previously served as Security Operations Program Manager for a US DOD Field Agency, based in Arlington, VA.
He is a member of the CSA CloudSIRT working group developing the model for response collaboration among cloud providers, responders and users; the CSA Security-as-a-Service working group developing the definitions for SECaaS requirements and models, as well as a member of the IEEE Education working groups on Cloud and on Computer Software Security. He recently served as a member of the IS Alliance - NIST joint working group on VOIP SCAP security. He has taught Digital and Network Forensics courses at Georgia Regents University. He holds CISM (Certified Information Security Manager), CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor), CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional), CIFI (Certified Information Forensics Investigator), CSSLP (Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional), CAP (Certified Authorization Professional), CRISC (Certified in Risk & Information Systems Control), CMAS (Certified Master Antiterrorism Specialist), CAS-CTR (Certified Antiterrorism Specialist - Cyber Terrorism Response) and MBCI (Certified Member Business Continuity Institute) credentials.

Concise, Comprehensive and Understandable

If you're unfamiliar with economics in general, but are in the mining industry, I would recommend this book to you. Not only is Mining Economics and Strategy easy to understand, it incorporates helpful examples, methods and programs to support the text.
The book is not limited to mining engineers either. Examples and all information can be understood and utilised in all economical situations - i.e. anywhere money is involved.
As a mineral processing engineer this book was recommended by a mining engineer and I was pleasantly suprised with the detail and presentation of the book

Very practical approach with many excellent example evaluations

Runge's approach to this topic is the most practical of all the experts in this field. He provides many good examples with which you can model your own evaluation to most mining situations. He also offers a two day course, which also provides you with the book. His major competition is Frank Stermole, whose book is much more theoretical and harder to put into actual practice. I would recommend Ian Runge's book for those who need to get a good grasp on the subject in short order. Very well written, by a recognized PhD specializing in the topic.

This is a beautiful text written by somebody who not only deeply understands the structure/texture of the technical and commercial challenges inherent in mining projects, but who also explains them in a brilliantly succinct fashion. A very practical yet easy-to-read book.

Cute!!!!!!!!!

I've always loved this series. This book is especially good! I mean, sure, not a fast - paced action - adventure book, but seriously a good read. I love how Hayley overcomes her fears, and does what she needs to do. This is a perfect realistic fiction book for girls 9 - 13. Nice job, Lisa Papademetriou. ( p.s. the confessions are a nice touch.)

Ok but...

I love this book. But, in my opinion I wanted her to be with Marco and not kyle. I am not saying that becuz he is blind. I just think her and Marco have more history together and I know Marco like her I just wish that she would like him back. Kyle is nice but I don't think he belongs with her. But I love this series and these books.
