Dr Bianca Devos is Assistant Professor at the Center for Near and Middle East Studies at the University of Marburg (Germany). Her main fields of research are Iran’s modern history, particularly the press and early modern entrepreneurship, and literary history.

Professor Christoph Werner holds the chair of Iranian Studies at the Center for Near and Middle East Studies at the University of Marburg (Germany). His main fields of interest are Qajar history, vaqf studies, and modern Persian literature.

Excellent and well organized spectroscopy book

The chapter on quantum mechanics is well organized, and introduces the reader into the tools necessary for understanding the logic behind molecular spectroscopy. Simple, clear and easy to follow. The way the book is organized is also very good, from general/simple to specific/complex, so it's suitable for undergraduate students and all type of scientists.

The plot revolves around the escape from a mental hospital of four very old Indians called Ishmael, Hawkeye, Robinson Crusoe and the Lone Ranger. These, however, are no ordinary natives. They may be the last survivors of the Indians interned at Fort Marion in Florida in the 19th century. Or perhaps they are the first human beings, as described in tribal creation myths. Their repeated breakouts--37 to date--have coincided with disasters: the 1929 stock market crash, the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, etc. Their mission this time brings them into the lives of an eccentric Canadian Blackfoot family: Lionel Red Dog, who sells TV sets and has no ambition; his sister Latisha, who owns a restaurant that bilks thrill-seeking tourists by purporting to serve them dog meat; Uncle Eli Stands Alone, a former university professor who is determined to prevent the operation of a dam on Indian land; and Charlie Looking Bear, a smarmy lawyer who works for the company opposing Eli's cause. Wavering emotionally between Lionel and Charlie is Alberta Frank, who dates both of them and wants a baby but knows that neither man is husband material. King, a professor of Native American studies at the University of Minnesota, skillfully interweaves Native American and EuroAmerican literatures, exploring the truths of each. Lionel Red Dog is a disaffected Blackfoot on the eve of his 40th birthday; he sells televisions in a rural part of southern Alberta, but tells himself that one day he'll go back to college to get his Ph.D. like his uncle Eli. Meanwhile, his relationship with his girlfriend Alberta lacks certainty also, since he has to share her with his lawyer cousin Charlie, but she resists the mere mention of marriage, preferring to have a child by artificial insemination than be saddled with any man. Things begin to change on that fateful day, however, when Lionel and his aunt stop to pick up four ancient Indian hitchhikers who take an avid interest in him. As all paths converge on the reservation in time for Sun Dance, Lionel is brought back to his tribal roots by family and the powers-that-be, becoming a protector of the sacred ceremony, while Uncle Eli finally wins his one-man stand against the corporation that built a massive dam just upriver from his mother's log cabin- -with a little help from trickster Coyote, whose dancing summons an earthquake. Combining traditional storytelling methods, a multitude of Native voices, and a tireless, subtle wit that culminates in an elaborate joke honoring the Columbus Quincentennial, the result is both comic and disturbingly accurate in its depiction of Indian realities today. If I could teach the world to read...

... I'd make them all read this book. I discovered it in my Native American Fiction class during my senior year at Yale, and in my four years as a literature major, I'd never read anything better. Thomas King is a genius. He is also, according to my professor, a man-- a fact that my entirely female class refused to believe after reading the brilliantly satirical reworkings of phallocentric myths and legends that he intersperses throughout the book. His characters are hilariously and achingly real; his prose transcends the written word in its effortless use of oral storytelling methods. If you're still reading my stumbling attempts to convey the brilliance of this book, please stop immediately and buy it. Buy a few copies, because you'll want to share this with your friends, and they won't want to give it back.

IT DOESNT GET ANY BETTER...

Halfway through "Green Grass.." , I stopped and read it from the start again. I've read everyone from Alexie to Welch and this is simply and undoubtedly the very best novel (or fiction) I've read about native americans yet. Actually, I think it's the best novel I've read in a decade at least. with Terrific characters and dialogue, a wicked sense of humor and a poignant sense of the human condition, this book is both mischievous and brilliant, capturing the trickster spirit, and the humor of modern day native american people. I can't wait for King's next book...And where is it, anyway?

This book is a brilliant, if slightly confusing, satire on the way white-christian-capitalist culture in North America has mistreated the aboriginal people. Blending reality and legend, this story pokes fun at the Canadian and American governments, Hollywood, and Christianity, through the lives of several Blackfoot people, both on and off the reserve, and the meddling of four ancient Indians and the trickster-god Coyote. This is a story that makes you think, while tears of laughter are rolling down your cheeks.

Dr. Stephen B. Shiring, Sr., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Hospitality Management at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. His professional work experience includes catering, consulting food broker, and restaurant management. Integrating a unique service learning experiences into his classes, Dr. Shiring has taught 21 different hospitality management courses, including catering and special events, hospitality marketing, strategic planning, principles of management, cost management, fundraising for special events, introduction to casino, human resources management, food production, purchasing, introduction to hospitality, and hospitality business model. Both an academic and internship adviser, he is the IUP faculty representative to the Walt Disney World College Program. He served as chairperson of the Department of Hospitality Management for seven years and is a member of the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education as well as serves on advisory committees representing both community colleges and vocational-technical high schools. In addition, he volunteers as a subject specialist for the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Education, serving as an on-site evaluator for Hospitality & Tourism Management Programs seeking accreditation. Dr. Shiring's numerous awards include the IUP African American Cultural Center's Award of Recognition. He received his doctorate degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

This collection of essays emerges from a two-day international conference held at the University of Northampton, UK. It contains the best of the papers presented by 45 delegates from 12 countries (UK, India, USA, Canada, Italy, France, Ireland, Australia, Romania, Japan, Germany, Portugal) involving both established academics and new scholars. The collection is divided into three parts. Part 1: 'Medieval and Early-Modern Cities: Performance and Poetry', Part 2: 'Defining Urban Space: the Metropolis and the Provincial', and Part 3: 'Modern and Postmodern Cities: Marginal Urban Identities'. The chapters explore the nature of the modern city in literature, history, film and culture from its origins in the early-modern period to postmodern dislocations and considers the city as a context within which literature is created, structured, and inspired, and as a space within which distinct voices and genres emerge. Much interest has developed recently on the city and its contexts but there is a tendency to focus on London (for example there is the journal Literary London: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Representation of London and the annual Literary London Conference, a major conference that has run since 2002). This collection fills an important gap in the market by having a truly global focus.

Joan Fitzpatrick is a lecturer in English at Loughborough University. She has published articles on Shakespeare, Spenser, Ireland and gender and writes the 'Spenser and Sidney' section of The Year's Work in English Studies (Oxford University Press). Her third monograph entitled Food in Shakespeare: Early Modern Dietaries and the Plays was published in June 2007 by Ashgate
