I read about 50 pages and then stopped. Shipley is very angry. I respect that. If you're very angry and like sci-fi and philosophy you may very well treasure this book. It was too bitter for me. SO I decided to put it in one of those "Take a Book, Leave a Book :D"- tiny library-things you see sometimes in suburban neighborhoods. When I went to see if it was there a few weeks later it was gone. I hope someone is reading it but it's much more likely that a soccer-mom saw it and through it away.

Fun times ahead!

This is indeed a strange novel. I don't entirely know what to make of it. It's funny in a dark and grimy way, though it's by no means a comedic novel. In fact, I imagine a great many people won't find it funny at all. The story is actually quite straightforward once you get into it, but it might take a couple false starts in the first few pages for the reader. The reason is, and what I like about the book, is that you're dropped into the world of the story without explanation, so it avoids all that boring background and world building exposition common to science fiction and fantasy books.

If you stick with it you're bound to enjoy the book a lot. Keep in mind that it's not only dark and grimy, but ugly and violent too, so if those aren't your things this won't be for you. It's not gratuitous, though, so gore hounds and the like might be disappointed. I think of things like late eighties and early nineties anime, William S. Burroughs, early David Cronenberg, and similar things when I think about DREAMS OF AMPUTATION, but it is easily its own thing.

"Aiming their work primarily at members of the US defense and intelligence communities interested in engaging China on counterterrorism issues, Reed (BAE Systems) and Raschke (Global Defense Technology and Systems) profile the East Turkistan Islamic Movement, a small separatist group arising out of the Uyghur population of Xinjiang. They first provide a sketch of the contemporary and historical contexts of Uyghur separatism. They then reconstruct the ETIM's origins, evolution, ideology, rhetoric, and activities based on information gathered from ETIM's website and public statements, media reports, Chinese news releases, human rights reports, US Defense Department documentation on the Uyghur prisoners at Guantanamo, and other sources and conduct an assessment of the group's transnational presence. They also discuss China's approach to ETIM within the context of China's wider political agenda and describe current US policy towards the group. One of the most beautiful books I have seen

Being familiar with two earlier Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI) publications--The Evolution of Fashion (19th & 20th Century) and The Revolution of Fashion (18th Century)--I was excited to discover that Taschen had produced a new book covering fashions from the 18th to the 20th Century found in the KCI collection. Although I was concerned that this new book might just be a revision and compilation of photos from the two earlier exhibits (with, perhaps, some additional costumes to cover the second-half of the 20th Century), at 700+ pages, I figured there must be at least a few new entries.
The book arrived today and I have been unable to put it down. As soon as I opened the book, I knew that my fears had been unfounded. The new book not only includes costumes found in the earlier books, but includes detailed close-ups of those costumes and many new costumes. The depth of color and detail in the photos is extraordinary. (Taschen is well known for the quality of its publications.) Although the text accompanying the photos is generally quite minimal--limited in many cases to date, description and the inventory number of each piece--it will often include some historical information in an introduction to a period or style. Moreover, many of the 20th Century entries are preceded by a short biographical sketch of the designer whose fashions follow.
The KCI is well-known for its extensive collection of Western costume. One of the Institute's rather unique features lies in its presentation of those costumes. Rather than laying the clothes out flat, they are displayed on manikins in the manner in which they would have been worn--including shoes, hats, gloves, purses, fans, etc. Through this book, Taschen has succeeded in making the KCI collection accessible to the rest of the world.
(As testament to the quality and beauty of this book, two co-workers I showed the book to today--people who are not costumers or designers--have placed their orders for a copy.)
Without a doubt, this book will be a well-treasured addition to my library.

this book is one of the best

This book is spectacular. I have nothing bad to say about it at all. It chronicles fashion from the 18th century to today, and it shows as well as tells you clear examples of every changing detail. I'm interested in both historical and modern fashion, and this book is a fantastic resource for both victorian fashion and current fashion and everything in between. the picture quality is top notch and every item is displayed and photographed flawlessly. the text is interesting and informative. i'd say this is a must have for any fashion student, especially ones interested in alternative or historical fashion. I like that this book chronicles western fashion, but since it was published in japan from a japanese school, it examines the effects that the east had on western fashion. they also include lots of women designers even from historical times when women were not commonly coture designers. there is detailed information about why fashions changed and the influences impacting the changes without getting off the subject and turning into a history lesson. this book gets an A+ and is worth every penny i paied for it. (at a museum, so i didn't get the amazon discount either.)

Where has this book been all my life?

This tome has rocketed to the top of my costume book collection. Fine quality color photographs with plenty of detail shots of one of the most impressive collections of costume in the world for around $30? An unbelievable value! Each era is covered well, but I found the clothing from 1750-1800 to be especially gorgeous. If you have an interest in historic clothing get this book NOW!

Enjoyable read and a must if you like the supernatural or anything Scottish

Nominated for awards, crammed full of award winning authors, the Terror Tales series, edited by Paul Finch and published by Gray Friar Press, is now on its eighth volume: TERROR TALES OF THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS. Happily I’m in it along with several other Scottish authors whose work I enjoy and admire. The “Terror Tales” series is rapidly spanning the British Isles in disseminating horror and ghostliness in a broth of old and new tales based on the folklore of the region. Paul Finch puts wafers of legend, horrific happenings and terrifying tales in between the short stories, which are a times even more compelling than some of the stories themselves. The series even threatens to go beyond the isles, which is great news for lovers of the supernatural , the occult and those who like their bedtime reading inspirationally morbid.

Ian Hunter kicks of with “Skye’s Skary Places” an excellent piece about the isle of Skye and a man’s increasingly tenuous relationship with his partner. Helen Grant’s “The Dove” continues the high standard set as it explores that awful moment under the shadow of the gallows. “Strone House” by Barbara Roden is a personal favourite. I’ve always had a penchant for the surreal aspects of automata; a nice story with its unexpected contrast: a mechanical world not generally associated with the grandeur of the highlands. “Face Down in the Earth” by Tom Johnstone is a personal reminder that Highlanders have very very long memories. “The Dreaming God Is Singing Where She Lies” by William Meikle is also excellently placed with it’s one fault being that I would have liked another five pages of it.

Rosie Seymour’s “The Housekeeper” has echoes of Pan Horror with a spicing of class. It’s very short but for this kind of story, short is exactly right. “The Executioner” by Peter Bell reads at times like a climbing manual and in another author might have fallen flat on its face. In Bell’s hands it becomes, for me at least, a form of poetry. An excellent story and perhaps my favourite in the anthology. “You Must Be Cold” by John Whitbourn is an intelligent and well crafted piece – not my preferred style of writing (too many brackets) but it’s a subtle, unexpected and unusual tale. I haven’t seen one like it before.

Sheila Hodgson’s “The Fellow Travellers” began very well and continued for about two thirds of the story to be absolutely compelling. Maybe I am just simple minded but beyond that there seemed to be a proliferation of unnecessary characters. Might have to reread it to get the full flavour. “Shelleycoat” by Graeme Hurry was a decent short, good concept and interesting ending. “The Other House, the Other Voice” by yours truly deals with Crowley. You’ll have to judge that one for yourself

“Myself / Thyself” by D.P. Watt comes quite close to being a classic and I can imagine it being reprinted. “Broken Spectres” by Carl Barker was conceptually very good and well written but didn’t quite grab me; probably sounds silly in the context of the supernatural but it may have lacked a certain necessary plausibility – despite that misgiving, it was very good.

Gary Fry’s “Jack Knife” as one might expect, is expertly written, enjoyable and leaves the reader with that oozy feeling of worse to come. Johnny Mains, no stranger to the world of Horror as an editor, has been quietly honing his other skills as a writer. “The Foul Mass at Tongue House” is a fine example of his development: an enjoyable tale.

“There You’ll Be” by Carole Johnstone was a strange beast for me – an almost perfectly written plotted and paced tale which unfortunately did not hit the eerie button – maybe I’m just a darker soul.

Finally, wouldn’t be right not to mention Paul Finch. I don’t read much short fiction now as I prefer drier stuff. The highlight of the series is undoubtedly the snippets of legends and folklore which really ice the supernatural cake. The series is indubitably at the top end of the market and is frankly a must buy if you like that kind of thing.

Terrific terror tales of the scottish highlands

I don't know what I enjoyed more, the eerie folktales and legends or the stories interweaving them.
Some truly superbly creepy stories here, in some ways it reminds me of all the old regional ghost books my mother would buy on her travels. I loved reading about all the mysteries and legends and how the stories fitted in and held their own.
I am definitely going to buy more of these books.
