Welcome to the Brushworm! Here is where we talk about artwork. Most of it will probably be of a more geeky variety but that’s in sync with almost everything else on this website. So without further ado…let us dive into the world of pencils and sketchbooks with a look at The Art of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

Background: Cataclysm is the Third Expansion of the MMORPG Video Game World of Warcraft. The main story is the return of the evil dragon Deathwing and the changes he wreaks upon the world of Azeroth. His return shakes the world to its core drastically altering and adding new areas. In terms of the lore, two new races are added to the line-up of the two major factions, Goblins to the Horde and The Worgen to the Alliance. The level cap is raised to 85 as well. The expansion was met with critical acclaim and helped revitalize the Warcraft Franchise.

The Art: The Worm loves concept art.

Seriously, a good chunk of his image library contains concept art from multiple sources but the majority of it is from video games. Sometimes it is better than the final product we get in the game. Often times that is because hardware and software limitations make it difficult to implement the sheer scope of the artist’s imagination into the final product. Here, their imagination is put onto full view for us all to enjoy.

The sheer scope of dedication, talent and creativity that goes into not only Cataclysm but also the whole game in general is nothing short of astounding. Every image is unique and shows what could of been in the game and sometimes it is what ended up in the final product. The Worgen are a particular favorite. It was said then and it is said now: It is about time that the Alliance got a race with some teeth! The artists do a great job of making the Goblins and Kezan very unique while keeping in line with the World of Warcraft motif.

In the end…what is so great about concept art or just art in general, are the stories that can be told. When the worm looks at the image, he wonders what could be going on inside that castle or the name of that character and what his/her destiny could be. The stories that are told and what could be told is what makes this book so compelling.

Often times, that one image is the seed a writer needs to craft a story. Many websites have concept art writing prompts, where users write a story based off of a piece of art found on their journeys through the Web. It is the same for the Worm.

ABsolutely wonderful, exactly as pictured, wonderful collection of art, so much detail in concept sketches and finalized pieces! If you want a well rounded art book from wow, for environment design this is definitely the book for you; forests, lava.

About the Author
Julian Cowan Hill first developed tinnitus when he was 16. By 30 his symptoms were so severe he couldn't hear the phone ring or hold down a job. He found help through craniosacral therapy. Six months later his tinnitus had gone. He decided to dedicate his professional life to helping others let go of tinnitus. He qualified as a craniosacral therapist and then as a psychotherapist, and now helps hundreds of people all over the world from his practice based in Paddington, Central London.

Maybe the Only Book You'll Need on the Subject

This book appears to be a coffee table book. Full color photographs, expensive paper, text interspersed with photos on every page, Wide text margins. One might think the publisher was trying to stretch inadequate text and fill the remaining spaces with photos. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This is a serious book about a serious subject, the camera lens. Almost any topic that deals with the lens is covered in this book. Starting with a historical perspective, it then explores the wave action of light, explains in moderate detail the physics of lens, and then goes into a description of why most modern lens are compared to the lens of 35 mm cameras.

Aperture, F stop, lens elements, fast lens, slow lens, metering, mechanisms, the list goes on and on. Lens from different manufacturers are described, an explanation of why the "perfect" lens doesn't exist, matching the lens to the project, choosing the right lens letting your creativity free . . .

And it's not just the completeness of the presentation that beckons, the simple clarity of the text is a model for those who write of technical subjects for the amateur. The book is not likely to interest the professional or serious amateur, they'll already know most of the material. But for the beginner to middle level amateur, there is much here to study.

This is a very impressive book. If you love cameras, if you'd like good advice about choosing lens for your camera, if you'd just like to understand the relationship between aperture and focal length in composing pictures, and more, then this is a worthy addition to your collection. And maybe the coffee table isn't such a bad spot for this book, you'll be able to pick the book up regularly and learn a bit more about the camera eye view of the world.

this was and excellent book. I thought i was buying a guide to buying lenses, and instead I got an education on lenses. History of optics, overview of light, lens mechanics, and then the info i bought the book for.
Five star book : well written and organized, AWESOME photos, and this will be a reference guide for me.

The lens is easily the single most complicated piece of equipment in any photographer's arsenal. Yet even some accomplished photographers find it hard to grasp all the intricacies and nuances and camera lens hows and whys. That's where this book comes in. Whether you want to learn, need a refresher, are buying this book for a novice photographer, or just want a handy, thorough reference, pick up The Lens. At Amazon's price it's a steal.

About the Author
Vasant Lad, Ayurvedic Physician, brings a wealth of classroom and practical experience to the United States. He received the degree of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pune, in Pune, India in 1968 and a Master of Ayurvedic Science from Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya in Pune, India in 1980. For 3 years, Dr. Lad served as Medical Director of the Ayurveda Hospital in Pune. He also held the position of Professor of Clinical Medicine for seven years at the Pune University College of Ayurvedic Medicine, where he was an instructor for many years. Dr. Lad's academic and practical training includes the study of allopathic medicine (Western Medicine) and surgery as well as traditional Ayurveda. In 1979, he began traveling throughout the United States sharing his knowledge of Ayurveda, and in 1981, he returned to New Mexico to teach Ayurveda. Dr. Lad founded and has served as the Director of The Ayurvedic Institute since 1984.

Anisha Durve is an Acupuncture Physician, Ayurvedic practitioner and Yoga therapist practicing in Florida. She completed her three year clinical training in acupuncture at the Southwest College of Acupuncture in Albuquerque, New Mexico, graduating in 2000 with a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine degree. Afterwards, she completed a clinical internship at the Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing, China. Anisha spent four years training under Dr. Vasant Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico as well as his clinic in Pune, India. She received additional training in panchakarma at the Indus Valley Ayurvedic Center in Mysore, India. To deepen her studies in yoga, she trained at the Vivekananda Yoga Kendra in Bangalore, India and is a certified relax and renew instructor. Anisha is enthusiastic about teaching workshops on marma therapy for acupuncturists, Ayurvedic practitioners, yoga teachers and massage therapists around the country.

Simply the Best

I've read many (good) books on Marma Chikitsa, from western and Indian authors. But I always felt that something was missing. This book from Dr. Lad is simply the best and most complete book. It brings a comprehensive description of 117 points (more than all other books), and a very interesting correlation with acupoint. It is certainly an essential book for those who want deeper studies on Ayurveda.

The Safety Standard. Period.

Thirty years ago I met the predecessor to this volume. Sounds like a long time? I have made it those 30 years because of what I learned from this book.
If you are a chemistry student (I was a freshman when I encountered this book) then you need to read this book before you start working with your reagents.
If you are employed in a field where you work in a laboratory or come into contact with laboratory materials (albeit - it is aimed at chemical labs and not specifically at bioscience labs) then you need to read about the materials you could be exposed to, BEFORE you are exposed.
If you are a medical professional - then you already have one.
If you are a legal professional and you deal with toxic torts: you need one.
Concise, clear and accessible by any high school grad. If you work with chemicals - you need this book.

Disappointing, Could Have Been Better

This novel is a reissue of a book written in 2001. I’m finding it difficult to come up with an original view on this book. Having read many of Ms. Kearsley’s novels and enjoying them immensely I was disappointed in this offering. The story was so very slow with most of the action and romance coming at the end of the book. There are pages of description that seem repetitious. The plot would have been interesting in a shorter book but the pacing here almost killed my interest in finishing. But I did plow through because even though I found it difficult there is always that seed of something-will-happen-to-change-my-opinion but sorry to say that never happened here. And yet I must give Ms. Kearsley her due accolades; she can write description of place and time beautifully. If you want a truly wonderful Susanna Kearsley book then pick THE WINTER SEA, MARIANA, THE SHADOWY HORSES OR THE ROSE GARDEN all of those are just wonderful.

Intense Romantic Suspense

In 1920's Italy, Galeazzo D'Ascanio was unable to see the performance of his wonderful play, Il Prezzo. Celia Sands, his beautiful English mistress and star of the play, vanished without a trace the night before the opening performance.
Now, some eighty years later, Alessandro 'Alex' D'Ascanio, grandson of Galeazzo, has contacted Celia Sands, a struggling young English actress, asking that she perform the lead in Il Prezzo, a never performed play. The Forlani Trust is restoring Il Piacere, Galeazzo's magnificent villa on Lake Garda, and the play will be performed at an outdoor theater there.
Celia isn't certain that she should take this role, since it appears that she is desired merely because she possesses the same name as the original Celia. But her mentor, pseudo-guardian and director Rupert does his best to quietly persuade Celia to take this part. And Celia ventures off to Italy and the disquiet of Il Piacere. The maid thinks that Celia's room has ghosts of its own even as Celia seems drawn to Alex whose comings and goings lend an air of mystery to the place. Add to the mix Daniela Forlani, whose possessiveness of Alex alludes to Francesca, Galeazzo's wife, who was jealous of his relationship with Celia.
Written in the first person, SEASON OF STORMS is a top-notch suspenseful novel that evolves into a truly riveting read. The mystery is not in the form of cliffhangers but a more slow-paced discovery of clues that will fall into place like the pieces of a puzzle. Rich with evocatively descriptive language, SEASON OF STORMS will transport you to another place, where murder and ghosts are a distinct probability.

MILDLY SUSPENSEFUL...

This is a somewhat tepid book by this award winning author. Perhaps because her other novels are so terrific, this one pales in comparison. While well written, it moves along at a ponderous pace, a lull before the storm that never quite arrives.

The author weaves two stories in one. One is about a turn of the century actress, Celia Sands, who mysteriously disappeared, during a torrid affair with her wealthy, married Italian lover, who wrote a play for her. She never had an opportunity to perform the leading role in her lover's masterpiece, however, due to her untimely disappearance. The main story line is about a present day actress of the same name, though no relation, who is called upon to play the role the first Celia Sands was unable to play.

For this role, Ms. Sands is brought to a villa in Italy, which was once the home of the playwright and now belongs to his grandson, Alex. While there, Celia realizes that there are some strange goings on, but does not know why. All soon becomes clear, though it takes many pages for everything to fall into place. There is really nothing too mysterious in this mildly suspenseful novel.

Those who have read the author's other novels may be mildly disappointed. Newcomers to this author may enjoy it more. Nonetheless, it is still a well written, though somewhat tepid and belabored, novel.
