Decent, but needs a lot of work

I used this book for a Biochemical Engineering course in the Chemical Engineering department. The book covers a wide range of topics in the field, including a section at the end dealing with an economic analysis of various processes which I found quite useful. What the book is really lacking are worked out example problems - there are very few throughout. Also I would have liked solutions to the problems at the end of each chapter. Some of the coverage is very thin on a few topics, sometimes leaving derivations or other formulas unexplained, so I had to rely on the lectures to cover the topics more in depth.

High quality book, but kind of old.

**Intro**
This book is kind of like the biological reaction version of the book Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering by Scott Fogler, which covers non-biological reactions. This book coaches you through the mathematics governing biochemical reactions, which tend to be a little different than normal chemical reactions because they follow the Michaelis-Menten relationship. It also explains how to solve the governing equations graphically, which is a great quick and dirty, old school technique that still works well.

**Quality of the book itself and the writing**
This book is well-written and edited. The formulas are clearly presented. The figures are depicted in B&W, but they are in good resolution, clarity, and design. There are no bad surprises here. Like with most chemical engineering textbooks, there are tons of complicated variables being used in the equations, but there is a nice nomenclature list at the end of each chapter with the definition and units for each variable. The paper that this book is printed on is coarser than the paper of the Fogler book. The graphics in this book do look old school (remember, 1997), but they are still of higher quality than the graphics in the Fogler book, which were unprofessionally grainy at times.

**Other comments/Conclusion**
The one disadvantage of this book that jumps out at me is that it was published in 1997. The field of biology has been moving very fast, and a lot has happened since 1997. I can't help but wonder how the field has advanced since then, but it looks like there isn't a new edition of this book yet available, which is a pity. For this reason alone, it might make sense to get a newer book about this topic from another author if a new edition of this one continues to be unavailable.

About the Author
Nigel Roebuck (born in 1946, in Manchester, Lancashire, England) is an English journalist. Since 1971 he has reported on Formula One, and is considered one of the sport's most influential writers.  Roebuck continues to write for Autosport, plus Autoweek in the USA and a retrospective column in Motorsport magazine. His flowing, laconic and self effacing style is matched only by its insightfulness, honesty and humor, and occasional, heavy-handed reference to UK party politics. In 1982 Roebuck drove a Formula One Renault turbo at Circuit Paul Ricard in France.

A great addition to any fans library

A lot of time and research has gone into this huge volume which in itself deserves 5 stars, except that there are many irritating errors throughout which may be due to the translation from French to English. There are many sentences which just stop in mid sentence and become very irritating after a while. It seems there was no proof reading done before publication. It also boasts a complete driver by driver line up, which I thought would include every F1 driver to date, but only includes the more prominent ones. It does however have a complete list of all teams that have raced in F1 with a complete chapter on each with drawings of all the teams cars raced as well as all the circuits old and new. All in all this is still a must have for any F1 fan.

Too heavy on the theoretical side

I read somewhere that if you can take one good idea away from reading a book, consider the experience a success. Call me greedy, but I expected more practical advice from "The Art of Piano Playing". The author's intent is to show how the central nervous system plays a primary role in the learning/performing process. He makes his case with an historical survey of earlier schools of thought concerning piano technique that, according to the author, culminated in an impasse in the early twentieth century. As scientific research into brain functioning progressed, the tools were now in place to make a case for the neurobiological basis of piano technique. What this boils down to is, essentially: 1) the aural image one creates in the mind of a musical composition is paramount and the urge to recreate that image will drive the learning and performing process. 2) practice slowly to establish and engrain neurological connections. 3) be flexible in your technique regarding fingering, arm position, etc. 4) the most effective learning is accompanied by intense concentration.
I've simplified, but this is what I walked away with. Unfortunately, the author spends more time justifying his theoretical argument than describing the practical application of his ideas. The book was written in 1967 when perhaps these thoughts were more radical. If you're intrigued and enjoy a heavy scientific bent, this book might be for you, but if you're looking for detailed practical advice on piano technique, I'm afraid other authors have done it better.

Probably the best book on the mind/body/nervous system/piano relationship

I agree with the previous reviewer that this book can be heavy going, though after repeated readings none of the writing seems to me to be waffle or redundant. However, this is more than compensated for by the breadth of coverage of the various schools of piano pedagogy and the problems associated with each. The amount of research that Kochevitsky displays both scientifically with relation to piano playing and piano pedagogy itself is simply awesome (the bibiliography will blow your mind!)

It seems to me that this book needs careful and repeated reading to get the best out of it. There are real nuggets to be mined, but they're buried in the rubble of explanation instead of being clearly dug out into a separate chapter.

Even at the beginning of the 21st century, almost all the old books on piano playing can still be easily found and one of this book's great merits is the careful deconstruction of all that's misguided in all of them. It seems that the great pianists have become great through their own analysis and musical genius despite the teaching of any one school.

It's easy to miss this book in looking for the best in learning the piano. I've read almost all of them before finding it. But there's a LOT in here and I highly recommend a careful study of this book if you find your playing has hit a brick wall.

The Art of Piano Playing

Almost everything is said about Kochevitsky's book. Nevertheless I do not think it as a heavy book (80 pages??). Its bibliography is thouroughly relevant but unfortunately the russian titles are still unkonown in the west. Fortunately we have now one or two works from Grigory Kogan translated. But still, in the piano concertizing profession, people rarely take the time to read about this kind of subject. Unfortunately again many piano teachers come up with their own methods withou prior knowledge of all this body work of research. Many guru-like methods and approaches intoxicate this literature market. I consider Kochevistky's book practical and exhaustive. You just have to take the time to think and to learn what he is talking about, and often this requires some experience and humbleness. Personally I recommend it highly to all advanced pianists and students.

This book is great reading

"My Left Foot" is about a young man, born in 1932 to a Dublin bricklayer, with cerebral palsy who cannot even control his limbs let alone write his own autobiography. He starts off with his childhood: his relatives and doctors are telling his mother that he will amount to nothing; he was a moron. But his mother never gives up on him, for she knew that inside his useless body was a very capable mind. She teaches him to write with his left foot. By the time he's five years old, he knows his whole alphabet! He goes on and tells about his life growing up with twelve other siblings. He speaks of how the startling realization, that he was not like everyone else, changed his life. And he finishes with how he finds inside himself what he had all along. Christy Brown really shows his talent for writing in "My Left Foot". He tells his story without ever being depressing and sulky and there are parts that will just make you laugh out loud, especially when he talks about his first attempts at writing his autobiography.
The movie is also great; Daniel Day-Lewis, in his Oscar winning role, is excellent. It gave the book the recognition it deserved as being a great piece of classic literature

My Left Foot

I found Christy Brown's My Left Foot to be a fascinating read. It is the story of Christy's life and all the struggles he must overcome. Despite his disabilities, he was a multi-published author and an accomplished artist. He manages to do all these tasks with the use of his left foot.
I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially to a parent of a disabled child. The story gives hope and inspiration. Being the mother of a child with cerebral palsy myself, I could really relate to the events in the novel.

" Breathtaking!!"

The book "My Left Foot", was one of the best books I have read. It tells the life story of Christy Brown and how he still lived his life while his little body was twisted with a disease. I found it very touching at times and it made me happy to when he would over come bumps in his life. When he first made the letter "A" I was smiling from ear to ear.
I would recommend this book to for anyone to read, especially to a mother with a disabled child. It really proves that no matter who you are, you can do anything you put your mind to.
I can't wait to see the movie!

About the Author
The Author: Robin Andersen is Associate Professor of Communication and Media Studies and Director of the Peace and Justice Studies Program at Fordham University. She received her Ph.D. at the University of California, Irvine. Her writings appear in numerous book chapters and journal articles, and she is the author of Consumer Culture and TV Programming (1995) and co-editor of Critical Studies in Media Commercialism (2000).

A Must Read to Better Understand the War in Iraq

Media critic Robin Andersen's timely work, A Century of Media, A Century of War, is a must read for those seeking to understand how we were drawn into the war in Iraq.

Just how did the Bush Administration and its corporate media allies sell us on successive lies to get us into this war? Director of the Peace and Justice Studies Program at Fordham University, Professor Andersen investigates the collaborative relationship of the media with the current and past administrations to promote the wars of the last 100 years.

The chapter, "The Military Entertainment Complex: Permanent War and the Digital Spectacular," is the most cogent look yet at the nexus of the media industry and the Pentagon as Andersen examines the Department of Defense's (DOD) funding of corporate research and development of "militainment" for the recruitment, training and selling of current and future wars.

In her conclusion, "War, Humanism and Democracy," Andersen clearly elucidates the threat the media/DOD collusion is to democracy, writing, "Militainment does not fulfill the media's democratic mandate, any more than does the simple dissemination of government proclamations."

This seminal work provides the reader with a better understanding of how we are being manipulated and gives us the tools to cut through the media fog surrounding wars and maybe, just maybe, help prevent future armed conflicts that are not in the nation's interest.

An amazing study of the US state's wars and the media

This is an amazing book. Robin Andersen, Associate Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University, studies the US media's role in times of war. Her book is full of the most dreadful facts about the USA's wars. From print in World War One to video games in the Gulf War, the media have used the most up-to-date advertising and marketing techniques to whip up public support for those wars.

War video games promote war as a fun, empowering game. They are also used for military training. The video game America's Army became the army's most important recruitment tool. At one time it had three million players, making it the number one free online action game.

Digital spectaculars like Top Gun, Rambo, Saving Private Ryan, and Black Hawk Down all promote war as heroic and humane. Who needs reasons for war when there are such striking images of war?

The military becomes part of entertainment, especially sports events. Propaganda is silent about deaths, especially civilian deaths, about the use of vile anti-personnel weapons like phosphorus bombs and cluster bombs, about international law, and about opposition to the war.

General MacArthur admitted that the US forces' scorched earth policy had created `a wasteland' in North Korea. One of the Korean War's main activists, Dean Rusk, said, the USAF bombed `everything that moved, every brick standing on top of another brick'. An official communiqué said, "It's hard to find good targets, for we have burned out almost everything." In the 1950 No Gun Ri massacre, in South Korea, "Roughly three hundred civilians, many of them women and children, were bombed and strafed from the air by U.S. gunner pilots under direct military command to do so."

The best historian of the Korean War, Bruce Cumings, wrote of "three years of genocidal bombing by the U.S. Air Force which killed perhaps two million civilians (one-quarter of the population), dropped oceans of napalm, left barely a modern building standing, opened large dams to flood nearby rice valleys and kill thousands of peasants by denying them food, and went far beyond anything done in Vietnam in a conscious program of using air power to destroy a society ..."

The US invasion of Grenada was a `violation of international law', as the UN Security Council decided on 2 November 1983. In 1986 the International Court of Justice found the US state guilty of terrorism against Nicaragua. Former contra leader Edgar Chamorro wrote in his book Packaging the contras: a case of CIA disinformation, "During my four years as contra director, it was premeditated policy to terrorize civilian non-combatants to prevent them from cooperating with the Government. Hundreds of civilian murders, tortures and rapes were committed in pursuit of this policy, of which the `contra' leaders and their CIA superiors were well aware."

Chamorro also wrote, "It is a gross fabrication to claim that the contras are composed of democratic groups.... This is how murder and torture were justified, how the destruction of property and the sabotage of the economy and the social fabric of a nation were excused, all in the name of patriotism and anticommunism."

In 1990, a Kuwaiti girl lied to the US Congress that Iraqi soldiers had stormed Kuwaiti hospitals and thrown premature babies out of their incubators and left them on the floor to die. Amnesty International fell for this and stated in its report to Congress that 312 babies were killed. The girl who told this lie was the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the USA. The girl had been coached by the PR firm Hill and Knowlton. She later admitted her story was not true.

During the Gulf War of 1990-91, a study found that the more television that people watched, the less they knew and the more they backed the war.

The Downing Street memo of July 2002 said that war on Iraq was `inevitable' and that "facts were being fixed around the policy". Yet for months afterwards Bush and Blair lied that war would only be `a last resort'.

Totally Unbiased Reporting

This book is mostly fact, intertwined with the author's interpretation of the latter.

On page 315 author Robin Andersen writes about Abe Lincoln who said: "I am a firm believer in people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet the national crisis."

Unfortunately, the people are NOT given the facts, as Ms. Andersen shows for more than 300 pages.

This book documents how America's imperial tendencies have not simply been ignored, but promoted by the mass media.

Some quotes are as follows............

The author Robin Andersen refers to suffering and death as "an acceptable practice in contemporary democratic society." Is she referring to contemporary American democratic society, or contemporary world democratic society? One can only imagine.

On the Iraq War Andersen quotes a Dr. Jabbar who said: "I saw the cluster bombs with my own eyes. Not less than 60% of the dead were women and children."

Probably, most telling, she points out that the operation to rescue an elite group of American soldiers, documented in the film "Black Hawk Down," left more than one thousand Somalis dead, in order to rescue a dozen odd American soldiers.

A horribly accurate tale of government and media collaboration to present war to the public as something that we can't live without.

Four stars. One star missing for the staccato style of reporting. But this woman is a scholar, not a writer.

About the Author
The authors are Herbert Jacobs and James Sagner, PhD, both of whom reside and work in the New York City area and are principals of Bank Credit Training Partners. Sagner teaches MBA and executive education at the Universities of Bridgeport and North Carolina. He is also the Senior Manag¬ing Principal of Sagner/Marks, a treasury management consulting firm with offices in White Plains NY. Prior to forming Sagner/Marks in 1992, Sagner led the Consulting Services Division of the First National Bank of Chicago (now J.P. Morgan Chase). He has managed over 250 large-scale studies for companies and non-profit organizations worldwide. He is recognized as an expert in financial management and his clients have included leading insurance companies, securities firms, finance companies, banks, hospitals, manufacturing companies and service organizations. Most recently, he was the author of Essentials of Working Capital Management (Wiley, 2010). He has written six other books in finance and economics. He speaks regularly at professional conferences and has published some fifty papers. Jacobs is a consultant to the banking industry and an Adjunct Professor at New York University, teaching graduate courses in financial statement analysis, term lending and negotiating loan agreements. He was the General Manager of DEPFA Bank from 2000 – 2008. Previously he was Senior Analyst and Manager in Security Valuation Office of N.A.I.C. and a Senior Vice President of HSBC. During his tenure with these institutions, he served on various credit committees and ran credit training programs in the U.S. and Europe. He is a Member of the Board of Directors of College Loan Corporation.

Ok, but not good if you are an existing lender

A little high level if you are already a lender. Thought this book would provide oversight into structuring, leverage, Revolver vs. Term Loans...etc. Not that, but provides some oversight of what a Bank Relationship Manager does on a day-to-day basis.

Terribly written book; riddled with simple English and Math errors.

Terribly written. Simple errors all over the place make this book difficult to follow and understand. It's like the author neglected to hire an editor. Do not buy this book; there are many others on Amazon that are so much better than this.

Very good for people who want to understand commercial credit business

The book is very well written in plain English and in layman's terms. Original case studies by authors are as good as other business cases published by leading business schools. It is my view that buying this book will give you a better value than buying a couple of Harvard cases studies without relevant lectures.
