About the Author

Robert Gough holds a doctorate in botany and is Professor Emeritus of Horticulture at the College of Agriculture, Montana State University. He is the author of 17 gardening books, 500 extension service publications, and articles for Fine Gardening, Country Journal, National Gardening, Zone 4, Montana Magazine, and Harrowsmith. He served as Extension Horticulturalist in Montana, hosted the popular Dr. Bob’s Northern Gardening Tips radio program for 10 years, and was a panel member on PBS’s Montana Ag Live for 15 years.  He is a Fellow of both the American Society for Horticultural Science and the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, as well as a member of the advisory board of Zone 4.



Cheryl Moore-Gough holds an M.S. in Plant Sciences from Montana State University, where she is now an adjunct assistant professor in horticulture. Cheryl has taught and coordinated the Montana Master Gardener program and has published numerous works alone and with her husband, Dr. Robert Gough, including five gardening books. She has written for Montana Magazine, Fine Gardening, American Nurseryman, and Zone 4 Magazine, and she hosts Northern Gardening Tips, which is broadcast by radio stations throughout Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota on the Northern News Network. She has been gardening and saving seeds in Montana for 30 years.

Beautiful and well researched

The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds explains far more about how to grow garden plants and vegetables from seed than you can expect to find on the backs of the packages. It covers how to plant, how to cultivate, and how to harvest both the seeds and the vegetables or flowers that tempted you to pay for those seeds in the first place.

This book also competes effectively with Seeds of Woody Plants in North America and Seeds of Wildland Plants, the unexcelled "gold standard" reference sources compiled by the US Forest Service. The USFS books are somewhat more comprehensive in their coverage of American species, while The Complete Guide to Saving Seeds one has better presentation that will be more comfortable for newcomers to seed propagation.

Most readers will find this book educational reading that expands their horizons, though its style is encyclopedic and it lacks plot. The gardeners in your life who already have plots outside with sunshine will appreciate this book as a fascinating gift.

Incomplete guide to saving seeds.

So far I have looked up 4 different flowers common to our neighborhood and not found them O.K.-let's say maybe I don't know ALL the nicknames for them, or the latin names mostly because I am not a botanist. Merely a gardening enthusiast. Well I could look for a photo, right? Wrong. Far too few of those. I can't find a passion flower for instance. Aren't those pretty common? So now I have to search on the internet and therefore defeat the purpose ( at least part of it), of purchasing this book. I want to love this book, I was so excited to get it but am disappointed.

The Cruising Chef Cookbook

Having just begun sailing, cruising and cooking aboard our sailing vessel, I wanted an up-to-date good reference manual. I found this book quite by chance. I consider this to be an essential item for the "chef" aboard ship. Every tip imaginable is included. The recipes are simple to prepare, yet elegant and tasty. To my surprise it also contains a section on what to do with certain food obtained "on the hoof" in 3rd world countries. I will buy this book for friends as a Bon Voyage present. A "must-have" book in the galley! The sailing stories scattered about the book are also good reading.

This is a modsecurity book ONLY

The description seemed misleading. This book dedicates its entirety to apache modsecurity. Any and all of the defenses are with modsecurity.

So, 5 stars if you wanted a book on modsecurity. I obviously did not.

The defenses were basic and probably well written out, if you use modsecurity and need help understanding it. I personally have no use for this book and a complete waste of money.

Most of us would think 'web application' as our program we built as a web application. Apache is a webserver. I was hoping for a book that might have extra guidelines or thoughts on adding great things to your web apps to defend them.

This book does none of that for me.

So, if you are not looking for mod security info, do not waste money. Seller should add 'modsecurity' only and possibly renamed the book as 'Modsecurity used to defend web apps' or something.

buyer beware.

to top it off, this book is not 'new'...it has scratches all over the cover. If it is new then it was damaged from shipping...

EDIT: I have contacted wiley and a rep will be getting back to me about changing this description from 'great techniques AND some madsecurity code' to 'modsecurity techniques only'

Don't be misled by the small blurb about mod_security...this is all the book is, pure mod_Security.

Personally, if you want to use mod_Security I would highly recommend this book..but if you are looking for this as a companion to the hackers handbooks to beef up your web app security, then you will be completely disappointed and out 30 bucks.

Great security resource for web application developers

While far from scientific, a search of web application security vulnerabilities returns over 2,600,000 results. However you search for it, web applications need to be secured, and insecure web applications are a major problem.

In Web Application Defender's Cookbook: Battling Hackers and Protecting Users, author Ryan Barnett provides a highly technical resource for web application developers. All of the over 100 recipes are valuable tips on how to secure web applications.

In the forward to the book, Jeremiah Grossman of WhiteHat Security writes that a web defenders success comes down to understanding a few key points. One of those points is that defenders will find themselves responsible for protecting web suites they did not create and have little or no insight into or control over. That and Grossman's other observations highlight the imperative for organization to ensure that web application security is made an imperative.

Part of the challenge is that today's web sites are becoming more complex, with many interrelated connection, protocol and technologies. While many network infrastructures are a lot more secure; if web applications are not completely locked down, patched and secured, they are simply targets for attackers.

And the challenge is that even if a network is secured, it will still likely allow web traffic to pass through, given that http is perceived as friendly. And given that there is a lot that a firewall can't do; web application defense is a must-have item.
The reality is that securing web sites is difficult. But for those that want to ensure their web sites are as secure as possible, their developers should certainly implement the delicious recipes in Web Application Defender's Cookbook: Battling Hackers and Protecting Users.

It focuses a great deal on Mod Security for Apache; in some ways I wish it could be a bit more diversified.

I found the first part about measuring security to be very useful. It is beneficial to move beyond shock and awe when reporting about security to management. This book provides a way for real numbers that represent the validity of your security efforts.

Serious info for a serious home baker

I run a small CSA farm...that includes growing several strains of both modern and premodern wheat on a small scale. For three years I fussed in the kitchen with inadequate recipes, trying to learn to turn out a loaf of useful and edible sandwich bread...but I wasn't happy. There had to be more. This book was the answer to everything....on my very first try I turned out a whole wheat loaf of hard red winter wheat we milled here, and it was TO DIE FOR. This was the flavor and texture I knew must somehow be possible but I didn't understand what to do....problem solved! The delayed fermentation techniques presented here, and in his other books, act as complements to each other. I strongly recommend buying all three of his bread books.....the Bread Baker's Apprentice presents a solid scientific understanding of the chemistry of the bread. Use Whole Grain Breads to learn to succeed with (duh) whole grains. And use Crust and Crumb to round out your knowledge further with missing details of information on assorted grains, enriched breads, and more....I have to emphasize that one MUST take the time to read the books and understand the hows and whys of what is happening with the dough....merely diving straight to the recipes isn't good enough. The loaves in this book take a minimum of 3 days to create with large amounts of downtime interspersed...but you get out what you put in. If you're ready to be serious about eating the highest quality nutritious loaves, and raising your baking skills by several levels of knowledge and quality...this is your book. If you're looking to crank out a loaf in an hour, find something else.

I have finally made 100% whole wheat bread I enjoy eating, and I look forward to trying some ...

For many years, I would try every so often to make whole grain bread, and always get the same result:"Another two hundred of these, and I can build that outdoor fireplace I've always wanted". With this book, I have finally made 100% whole wheat bread I enjoy eating, and I look forward to trying some of the other variations in the book. The process is pretty straightforward, and the time investment not too burdensome - most of the work is small bursts of activity with long pauses in between. I especially liked making the sourdough starter from scratch, it was easy. The two major insights in this book are that you should do all measuring by weight instead of volume, and whole grain baking requires more hydration (fluids) than baking with white flour. There is a lot of information about baker's ratios that I have not seen elsewhere.

A word of advice: spring for the paper version, skip the kindle version. The pagination is messed up, and recipes are hard to follow because they are spread out over multiple pages, instead of on a single page, as it is laid out in the hardcover version. Difficult to flip pages on an iPad when your hands are covered in gooey dough.

Fantastic for an Intermediate Baker and above

The recipes in this book use a totally different method of making bread than what you are used to. They require at least 2 days to make the bread. Having said that, they are completely doable by any inept cooking moron (like me).

Some recipes do use odd ingredients, some that I could not even find on Amazon.com. I did find them available online though.

Also, I would using bread bricks or other means of adding steam to your oven for the best results in a standard oven. In my case, I have a Baker's Choice Woodstove which retains steam during baking. Even then, I put a cast iron pan with 1/2 cup of boiling water in it when I put the loaves in to bake.

Your results with making these loaves will be comparable to a Bakery.

The Timechart history of the world

A graphic and text timeline of 6000 years of history. Empires, kingdoms, countries, rulers, ancient wonders, it's all in time sequence. An incredible visual reference guide to the history of civilization. I recently purchase a couple extra copies as gifts, one for a 60 year old and one for a 9 year old. Who was empirer of china in 1100bc? How many times have France and Germany been under the same rule? How high were the walls of Babylon? It's all here. Found my copies at chapters.ca

His Classic Cases in Medical Ethics: Accounts of the Cases that Shaped Medical Ethics, 4th ed., 2003, is one of the standard textbooks of bioethics. His Who's Afraid of Human Cloning? (1998) is already regarded as a classic in bioethics for its rigorous attack on opponents of cloning. His Cloning After Dolly: Who's STILL Afraid of Human Cloning? will appear in late 2004. His Designer Food: Mutant Harvest or Breadbasket of the World? won a Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2003.

He doesn't think the sky will fall if a cloned baby is born. In opposing laws against cloning, he was asked to testify in 2001 before Congress and in 2002 before the California Senate.

Constantly in demand for national television, Pence has been interviewed on Bobby Battista's "Talk Back Live" with Bobby Battista, "The Point" with Gretta von Susteren on CNN, "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel" on CBS, "Wolf Blitzer's Washington" on CNN, as well as on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" and its "Weekend Edition." He has also been interviewed by TIME magazine, the New York Times, and most national publications. He has published in Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

Pence has given the Soundings Lecture at Castleton State College, VT, the Thornton Lecture at Alma College, MI, the Seidman Trust Lecture at Rhodes College, TN, and the Hughes Memorial Lecture at West Liberty State College in WVA. He has talked at Princeton, Yale, and Stanford. He has given keynote talks about cloning at universities in Portugal, London, Switzerland, and Australia.

Pence teaches at the medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), where he also directs a program for gifted undergraduates pre-admitted to UAB medical school. There, he has been voted Best Teacher.

He grew up in Washington, D.C., was graduated from the College of William and Mary cum laude in Philosophy, and earned his doctorate from New York University in 1974, where he worked on his dissertation under bioethicist Peter Singer, now at Princeton University.

Simply THE best introduction to medical ethics. Period.

I've been teaching with this book for nearly 10 years, having survived several new editions and I keep coming back to it, for several reasons:

1. It's easy to read. Honestly, some textbooks (especially Philosophy) can be dry, using big words to explain big concepts that only make sense to those in the major. This book is written in everyday language, which means a lot to undergraduate students with huge reading schedules. The key terms are still introduced, but in a way that's not off-putting to undergraduates.

2. It's interesting. The cases are about real people and the real medical dilemmas they were faced with, placed in the context of history and significance for ethics. It's all relevant.

3. The tough topics are there. Pence does a great job explaining what can be difficult ideas to grasp. The case studies are examples. The ethical debates are very clearly identified.

4. It's both ethics and medicine. Some other reviews (of previous editions) suggest the ethics chapter should be gone -- no way! The field is, after all, medical ETHICS, so it would be negligent not to include the ethical theory. Most of the concepts people already understand; Pence does a good job explaining the technical words for them (like utilitarianism, deontology, etc.).

5. It really is objective. Despite protests from those who feel Pence beats up on religion -- especially regarding abortion -- the many complicated sides of these controversial issues are presented. (NOTE: It is a FACT that the Catholic Church turned away from science in response to Darwin with its policy of infallibility in the late 19th century, that there's a ban against birth control, and that the Bible defines life according to breath through the nostrils. Pence presents this information because it impacts the interpretation of the Church's position on certain issues. If philosophy can't be critical, there is no point in studying ethics at all).

This is by far the best introduction to medical ethics I've found. It's not perfect, but there's nothing better. Yet.

Good job balancing both sides, and interesting.

I was dreading taking my medical ethics class, but having this book for our text made it interesting. The text was engaging and the average person should be able to understand it. I was pretty sure of how I felt about a lot of controversial medical topics before I read this book, but the author really opened my eyes in areas that surprised me. I didn't read the entire book, but about 3/4 of it, and I am very glad that I did.

I think the author did an excellent job of presenting both sides of issues. Just when I would think I had him figured out, he would turn and argue for the other side. Very informative.

I originally picked up this book for a class that I ended up dropping as I changed my majors. I opened up the first page and found it easy to read and easy to remember. Two things I don't often find books that relate to any specific field (right now I'm reading a dense book on economics).

It's a fascinating book that does provide both sides to the arguments. It's not biased, it's just presenting a fair, objective point of view backed by evidence of the claims i.e. the church's stance on abortion, cloning, assisted suicide, as well as providing a counter argument based off of those interested in compassion, the expression of the individual, and their right to a fair and humane life.

It's very informative and articles that would otherwise be hard to find on the internet and would be very dense or lengthy are summarized in layman's terms. I found that it makes it easy to remember the key points which can easily be recalled in a discussion of the subject. For example, before Roe vs. Wade, abortions were still happening just in unsafe conditions with a high mortality rate. After the Supreme court passed that landmark judgement, abortions were conducted within the letter of the law in more hygienic facilities with a lower mortality rate. Roe vs. Wade didn't make abortion normal or mainstream, it just moved the practice out of dangerous and dingy places where patients couldn't hold the practitioners liable for any complications or malpractice.
