From a set-up which subtly suggests the mercenary exploitation of the lost and the lonely, the play's arc turns to darker and stranger themes of metaphysical significance.

Playwright Joe Harbot wrote his first play, Gathered Dust and Dead Skin, when he was just fifteen and has recently graduated from the Royal Court's Young Writers' Program. His other plays include A Sock in the Wash (Live Theatre, Newcastle), Fish Missing (Theatre 503, Battersea), The Running Machine (rehearsed reading, Royal Court Upstairs) and This Way Up (Live Theatre, Newcastle). He has also had a short film, Linked, which was produced in 2007.

Better than Tunnels

Let's get to the point from the off: Deeper is better than Tunnels. I guess the next question is: how is it better?

First up there is the pacing. Deeper begins where Tunnels left off, with unlikely protagonist Will Burrows still on the trail of his lost, curator father, and finding his friend Chester on board the train that is transferring him to the subterranean hell-hole that is The Deeps. The authors have pulled out the stops in grabbing - and maintaining - the reader's interest; something sorely lacking in the first book.

Secondly there is more depth given to some of the main characters, the relationship between Will and Chester moves from the one dimensional, making the reader care a little more for these two guys. Will's estranged birth-mother is also given some airtime; her personality - feral - based upon her fugitive lifestyle as she keeps one step ahead of the relentless Styx.

To discuss plotline so soon after release would not be fair on those who have not had opportunity to read the tome. Lest to say that I found it an entertaining, albeit mirthless, affair.

So why three stars? Well, for this reader, some issues remain. The narrative remains clunky in places and it is becoming increasingly clear that one of the authors is adept and the other, quite possibly, isn't. The book also comes in at 675 pages and is still in need of a good edit. It has the `well proof-read, but poor copy edited' feel of a self-published book, and the publisher - not the authors - must take responsibility for this.

Gordon's and William's subterranean opus continues. No-one doubts that the world they are creating is inventive and, in this post-Potter hiatus, refreshingly different. I will stay with these guys in the hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel - heck, I'm intrigued enough.

Deeper and Darker

I ordered a copy of Deeper from an UK Amazon third party (I couldn't wait for the US release). I was expecting a lot in the way of character and plot development and I wasn't disappointed. If you enjoyed Tunnels, you'll love this sequel! The numerous nail-biting chapters leave the reader nearly as exhausted as the characters in the story! As dark as the Colony is described in Tunnels, the world of the Deeps is even darker and more deadly. However, the harshness of the environment is not nearly as terrifying as the evil of the Styx. A fantastic series!!

A Really Good Book with Serious Subject Matter

(Note: I read tunnels, thought it was really good and allowed my 12 year old daughter to read it). Deeper is a great book as far as creativity and action/adventure/suspense, and despite tough situations, there is virtually no inappropriate language and no sexual situations. It advocates friendship, loyalty, self-sacrifice and doing what is right. It does have violence, as the main characters are being hunted and fighting for their lives, but it's not too graphic. I also read it prior to giving it to my daughter, and I am going to hold off doing so for a little while longer, as one character contemplates suicide without any regret, and another character advocates a mercy killing and denies the existence of an afterlife. These are great topics to discuss at the appropriate time. I would definitely recommend this book for older teens.

Take Five! Staying Alert at Home and School

This book is full of great self-regulation strategies and activities that can be used at home, in the schools and out in the community. The strategies are fun, very practical and inexpensive. Take Five! includes strategy lists, clear activity suggestions and ways to adapt activities. I have found this book very helpful in preparing treatment plans and sensory diets. Kids love the activities. This book is a great support to the "How Does Your Engine Run?" Leader's Guide. Check it out, you will truly enjoy it!

Another user friendly book from TherapyWorks!

Review: I see this book as a natural progression after the original Alert Program Leaders Guide. I start with the Alert Program Leaders Guide to teach clients and caregivers about how to identify and change arousal. My colleagues have begun with this book and are seeing great results even without the experience of using the original AP Leaders Guide.
I use the Take Five: Staying Alert at Home and School for designing treatment plans in a variety of settings. This book offers many activities that evolve around five different ways to change their response to environmental demands. It can be used for individual or group sessions. It offers teams, parents and kiddos more opportunity for self exploration and adaptive strategies to participate in the occupation of being a kid! The authors offer two games ("Alert-Go Fish" and "Alert- Bingo") on their website that are a good buy, but I do not see them available on Amazon.

THE one-stop-shop resource for SPD activities / ideas / resources
By High Expectations
If you are looking for the one-stop-shop resource for children with sensory processing disorder, this book is it! Explains things thoroughly but simply and concisely. It has an amazing compilation of ideas/resources/activities that it typically takes many books / articles to find. I highly recommend it.

Lush, evocative, and poetic!

"Running in the Family" is an impressionistically written and reflective memoir of Michael Ondaatje's eccentric Ceylonese family.
The book begins with a series of disjointed stories about Ondaatje's parents and grandparents. I found this part somewhat hard to get through as Ondaatje drops into the stories without providing the reader with the necessary information to understand who the players are and why they are important. However, since the book is highly impressionistic in style, perhaps this approach works. After all, most of us learn about our family history in bits and pieces; we don't pick up yarns and memory bites in chronological order.
The third section, "Don't Talk to Me about Matisse" is a literary treasure! Ondaatje weaves a travel journal with childhood memories. Ondaatje's journey through Sri Lanka and memory land is depicted with great passion and reflection: "I witnessed everything. One morning I would wake and just smell things for the whole day, it was so rich I had to select senses. And still everything moved slowly with the assured fateful speed of a coconut falling on someone's head, like the Jaffna train, like the fan at low speed, like the necessary sleep in the afternoon with dreams blinded by toddy."
Ondaatje generously included several of his poems in the middle of the book. "The Cinnamon Peeler", with its strong sensuality, serves as a fitting metaphor for the stories about romantic interludes in the author's family. "The Cinnamon Peeler" is so beautiful, I plan to commit it to memory.
Ondaatje dwells on the salient qualities of his relatives and homeland. If this book were a painting, it would be a mostly green wash of color with bright, blood red splashes. The red splashes could represent the tragedy so inherent in Ondaatje's family history. Alcoholism and mental illness rule the house in this family. There are many humorous moments, however, and Ondaatje delivers them with great bravado: "Lalla's great claim to fame was that she was the first woman in Ceylon to have a mastectomy. ... She kept losing the contraption to servants who were mystified by it as well as to the dog, Chindit, who would be found gnawing at the foam as if it were tender chicken." These hilarious memories give the reader a reprieve from the underlying tragedy like a much-needed downpour during a drought.
In the final sections, Ondaatje slowly reveals the many layers of his father's sad, but remarkable life. One chapter, called "Dialogues" merely consists of bits and pieces of conversations about his father. Whether Ondaatje imagined these conversations or actually heard them retold is not important. They give homage to his father in a unique and poignant way.
If you're looking for a travel journal on Sri Lanka, don't look here. But, if you want unforgettable impressions of an exotic land and a remarkable family, if you yearn for a memoir rendered with the finest of literary care, "Running in the Family" will surely please.

For Those Who did not love "Anil's Ghost"

No author can make every book work. It's unfair to expect that. This is the first Ondaajate book I read, make that: devoured. I loved the non-linearity, the depth of love for his home country, the characters gathering and separating. I write this review because I believe strongly that Anil's Ghost is the companion piece to "Running in the Family" and less well-done, less artful. But this book more than makes up for the flaws in the later book. Perhaps the kleig lights of fame are too hot for a writer to work at his best. I say that because the author of this book is so gifted and has so much to evoke that I expect he will do so again, maybe not in his beloved, insane Sri Lanka, or maybe back there again. So, in closing, If you despaired of loving "Anil's Ghost" read this and you're efforts will be fully redeemed.

Lush and Beautifully Written

I thought that this was a beautiful book but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone-if you're the type whose reading is limited to thrillers and soppy romance then I doubt this would do for you. But if you like imaginative, beautiful, flawless writing, like me, then you'd love this wonderful memoir everybit as much as I did. Ondaatje transports you into his world through his witty, tender and sensual writing...in places it reads like a poem. Running in the Family is sort of like a sketchbook...filled with humourous anecdotes, sensual poems and glimpses of beauty and history...and of course, his outrageous family. Even though I live in Sri Lanka and am familiar with most of the places and things he writes about I was still delightfully stunned by the way he adds new insight and meaning and beauty to these things. Also, I used to imagine that memoirs were dull and boring...but I totally regret my words now. This is hilarious (though in places exaggerated), beautiful and powerful stuff and I give it my highest recommendation.
