Not an easy read, but full of facts and interesting timelines describing an amazing time in world history.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has tried to follow the many early events and personalities leading up to the amazing departure by Guy Burgess from the West.

What revolution?

There existed terrible poverty, starvation, and suffering in many parts of the world before the British Empire and capitalism reached them. There continues to be terrible such suffering after the British Empire and, in some sad cases, capitalism, have left, although less so in some areas. This is the biography of a man of little interest except for his treason. It is animated by passionate hatred of the British Empire and capitalism. Although this makes for extravagant attention to detail, it requires very narrow attention to a very limited historical time and array of characters and events.

There are some interesting items: the interview with Churchill; London clubs and nightlife; life in Moscow. Whether they are worth the voluminous and poorly organized material about the hero is debatable. Even if you hate the British Empire and capitalism you might want to do some skimming.

Noted Palestinian historian Khalidi presents the most credible argument to date in English for the existence of an amorphous Palestinian territory with an identifiable population existing before the emergence of political Zionism. The author's primary purpose is to establish the origins of a Palestinian national consciousness, which he does superbly, even with the obvious animus toward Israel and Zionism. Khalidi's research was greatly enhanced by his access to the family library in Jerusalem, bringing to light certain documentation for the first time. His historiographic method is path-breaking, including coverage of nonelite elements of Palestinian society involved in the development of a nationalistic sentiment. An impressively thoughtful, layered, and well documented study of key aspects of the evolution of modern Palestinian nationalism. Those expecting either a comprehensive history of the modern Palestinian movement or a polemic against Zionism and Israel should look elsewhere. Khalidi, who teaches history and directs the Center for International Studies at the University of Chicago, and who was a member of the Palestinian delegation to the Mideast peace negotiations, focuses almost entirely on the late Ottoman and early Mandate period (1880s through 1920s). He sees Palestinian nationalism emerging far earlier than is generally thought--in the preWW I period, when absentee landlords in Beirut and elsewhere sold large tracts of Palestinian land to the Jewish Colonization Association. Yet while modern Palestinian history is inextricably intertwined with that of Zionism, Khalidi focuses as much on other constituents of modern Palestinian identity, which include ``patriotic feelings, local loyalties, Arabism, religious sentiments, [and] higher levels of education and literacy.'' He demonstrates how the long-term influence of modernization, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, and concomitant European incursion in the preWW I era, followed by the betrayal of promises made by both the British and French, contributed as much to Palestinian nationalism as the 1917 Balfour Declaration and Zionist immigration. The only flaw here is that Khalidi races through the last 70 years of the development of Palestinian identity. Even here, however, he offers a fascinating analysis of why Palestinian nationalism seemingly became ``submerged'' after the first Arab- Israeli War (194749) and until the PLO's founding in 1964. Achieves its goal eloquently

Khalidi's goal is to make a case for Palestinian Nationalism's existence as not necessarily presuppossing the existence of Zionism; therefore, he places the locus of its origin before the *nakba* of 1948. To be specific, Khalidi situates the crucial years during the late and post-Ottoman period in Palestine. The author is not a primordialist, but rather, he is a constructivist. Taking nationalism as peculiar phenomenon to modernity, it locates him in a precarious position in which to create room for his argument, for he insists that Palestinian identity can be seen as a process which could have potentially evolved w/o Zionism as its interlocutor (though, of course, it did not). His arguments and presentation are masterful.
Recommended for anyone who studys the area and/or conflict, essential read.

Seeing Beyond the Terrorist: Palestinians Exposed

As an American Jew who spent a decade living in Israel and loathing "the Arabs" - this book has done more for my own personal transformation of "understanding the other" than any other experience. Khalidi is meticulous, yet dispassionate in his gathering of primary sources in which he documents the every day details of Palestinian life, particularly in the periods of Ottoman Empire rule and the British Mandate (before the founding of Israel). REGARDLESS of your views on "the conflict" this book is essential reading in exposing the HUMANITY of Palestine and Palestinians to the West. I found it particularly refreshing that unlike some researchers, Mr. Khalidi does not lament the tragedy of the Palestinian as solely a "travesty perpetrated by the Zionists". Rather, he takes to task his own people calling them on the failures that have perpetuated their misery, and the complicity of neighboring Arab states as well in the complex, sad, and often shadowy events that have befallen the Palestinian people.

Palestinian identity is indeed an outstanding book.Rashid Khalidi was always able to bring facts into existence.I highly recommend reading this book of great contribution to all those who wish to be enlightened about the history of the palestinian identity.

Awesome book for the serious '2001' fan

Years ago, I used to run an amateurish fansite devoted to the spacecraft and technology seen in "2001: A Space Odyssey." If only I'd had this book back then! "2001: The Lost Science" is a big (12 x 15 inch) 112-page glossy scrapbook focusing on the spacecraft, sets, props, and models shown in the film. While there is plenty of excellent material on the making of 2001 out there, this book focuses solely on the nitty-gritty, ultra-detailed hard sci-fi details that geeks like me love. I've been a fan of 2001 for at least 15 years, but I'd only seen about 10% of the material in this book before. Much of what's shown in this book was recently unearthed at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, and is shown here for the first time. A sampling of the new stuff includes:

-Pictures of the spacecraft cut from the film, including the Russian bomb satellite, the interplanetary probe that discovered the Monolith orbiting Jupiter, and a manned space station orbiting Venus.
-Detailed set blueprints, including the Pod Bay test bench, the Aries cockpit, and the circuit breaker room behind the Discovery's cockpit.
-Detailed technical notes from the late Frederick Ordway, the chief scientific adviser on the film, providing technical insights into the main spacecraft, the inner workings of Discovery's nuclear reactor, how HAL works, what the different spacesuit controls do, etc.
-Previously unseen production artwork, including a three-armed EVA pod and Discovery's atmospheric and soft landing probes.
-Excerpts from a 100-page Honeywell report titled "A prospectus for 2001 Interplanetary Flight."
-A large number of behind-the-scenes photographs of the spacecraft models being built.
-Close-up views of a number of spacecraft control panels, some of them detailed enough to read the individual labels, and all of the modules inside Discovery's centrifuge that we never get a good look at in the movie.
-The original set blueprint of the nuclear reactor control panel in Discovery's cockpit, with each button labeled and given logical functions.
-Pictures and descriptions of each of the scientific instruments at the TMA-1 site.
-A full-sized dimensioned production drawing of the HAL "faceplate" with a scan of the original HAL logo, for all the replica prop-makers out there.
-A list of all the companies that provided technical consultation to the production, and what they contributed.

"2001: The Lost Science" is an impressive reference book, but it will obviously only appeal to a small group of hardcore fans. Much has been written about the philosophical aspects of 2001, but very little on the cool spaceships. It's not a perfect book (there are quite a few typos, and the reproduction of some of the color photographs isn't that great), but there's so much new stuff here, and so much detail, it deserves a full five stars. Now, if only Adam K Johnson would get on the horn with Haynes and see if they want someone to do a "Discovery I Owner's Workshop Manual"...

Slightly over-sized but still a good purchase.

A very good book for 2001 aficionados. It is full of amazing photos and blueprints detailing all the sets and miniatures of 2001. My only criticism of the book is the size of it. It is really too big for my liking. The book is very hard to hold up while you are reading it. I suppose they printed it that big to allow more detail in the blue prints. And I also thought there would be more behind-the-scenes info on the movie. Instead the book concentrates more on the scientific credibility of the space technology. But having said that, 2001 The Lost Science is definitely a good addition to the library of any 2001: a Space Odyssey fan!

A great resource for the modeller and 2001 collector-I'm the latter.The accompanying DVD is an updated version of the 2002 title,''2001 and Beyond.'' Blueprints are excellent,it also includes photos of a deleted orbiting bomb -Russian ? - and a manned Venus-orbiting spacecraft.When I saw the movie in 1968,we really thought this'd all be here by now....

Sometimes it is hard to see that a relationship is abusive when there are no broken bones or bruises left behind. Words and actions can hurt as much if not worse. Faith finds herself in this kind of relationship and she looks into herself and decides to make a change for the better. She needs out of the marriage, and away from her husband. She makes a plan and starts the process. As hard as it is she keeps going until......you will have to check it out for yourself.

This story is well written and a good read. This brings to light a serious subject and the strength inside of us to overcome such things.

Verbal & Emotional Abuse is like a Cancer of the Soul.

This is a precious book of information and encouragement for women trapped in an abusive relationship. The story of Faith, based on actual case histories, is one that many women will identify with. We read in the news and see in the movies of domestic violence which is usually physical abuse. But I can testify personally that verbal, emotional abuse is far deadlier, debilitating and painful than any fist to the face. As a child raised on verbal abuse, I constantly heard the phrase "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me." Heard this quoted on the playground after an encounter with mean spirited kids. After a childhood of verbal abuse, I entered a marriage where the conditioning continued. It was there that I realized that childhood phrase was the most asinine set of words ever uttered. Now in my seventies, some old programming still has the ability to sting but it's only for a second. This book is an excellent opportunity to broach the subject of verbal, emotional abuse and to offer solid guidelines for overcoming and to present encouragement to every soul. I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Five Stars.

But enough is enough, so she makes a phone call that changed her way of thinking. She begins to plot on how she can leave her husband but has to have money for a place to live, food and other necessary things. She begins looking for a job secretly. About the Author
Rekha M. Chennattu, RA, is the head of the department of scriptural studies, Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pontifical Institute of Philosophy and Religion, India. She has a Licentiate in Scripture from Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome, and holds a PhD in Biblical Studies from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Since 1996, she has taught Scripture in India, the United States, France (Paris), Italy (Rome), and Jamaica. She has presented papers at various international conferences and published several scholarly articles in journals and books in India and abroad. She is coeditor of the book Transcending Boundaries: Contemporary Readings of the New Testament. Essays in Honor of Francis J. Moloney.
